We are seeking a dedicated Associate Scientist with expertise in analytical development

About the department
The department Stem Cell Process Development is part of Novo Nordisk’s newly established Stem Cell R&D unit, where we develop novel cell replacement therapies for the treatment of serious chronic diseases. Our department focuses on the development of manufacturing processes and related analysis. We control processes across the entire pluripotent stem cell workflow, starting with cell line derivation and ending with an efficacious and well-characterised product. Diabetes mellitus type 1, Parkinson’s disease and chronic heart failure are only some of the indications we are currently working on. You will join an international and dedicated group of 25 employees, including scientists, project leaders, laboratory technicians and student workers. We have expertise in bioprocess development, stem cell biology and GMP compliance and truly believe that stem cell therapies will make a difference in the lives of patients. If this sparks your interest, please apply and support us in translating stem cell products into the clinics.

The position
We are seeking a talented Associate Scientist to join our analytical method development team, consisting of experienced scientists and laboratory technicians. In the field of cell therapy, products are typically the result of long and complex in vitro differentiation protocols. Therefore, the development of robust product characterization methods to track and monitor cells as they differentiate is vitally important to bring safe cell therapy products to the market. In this position, you will develop various in vitro assays to characterize undifferentiated pluripotent stem cells, intermediate cell types as they proceed through various differentiation trajectories, as well as their terminally differentiated derivatives.

There will be a focus on developing multi-color flow cytometry assays. Additionally, you will support our development of methods assessing RNA expression, karyotypic stability and genome editing events. As you are supporting analytical development in several of our stem cell projects, you will be culturing and generating the appropriate control cell types to complement your experimental setups, such as pluripotent stem cells, pancreatic beta-cells and dopaminergic neurons. Therefore, this position requires daily hands-on work in our analytical and cell culture laboratories. Our department also strives to automate routine analysis tasks and we would like you to join this initiative. Overall, you deliver high quality data and results in a timely manner to internal stakeholders in all your tasks.

  • Position type: Permanent, Associate Scientist
  • Working hours: Full-time
  • Start date: 1st of January or February 2020
  • A Danish full-time work permit is required

Qualifications
You are passionate about stem cell biology and bioprocess development and hold a master’s degree in cell biology, human biology, biotechnology, immunology, or a similar field of studies. You have a few years of work experience - industrial work experience is an advantage, but not a prerequisite. You have a strong background in cell and molecular biology and have documented hands-on experience with cell culture and flow cytometry. In general, you have strong laboratory and troubleshooting skills and enjoy being in the lab. You like to analyze, interpret and discuss your scientific data with your colleagues and have a drive to take responsibility for your own projects and progress. Practical experience with stem cell culture systems, RNA expression analysis and precise genome engineering are advantages. Ideally, you are also familiar with flow cytometry analysis software and automatic liquid handling stations.
In addition to your strong scientific profile, you are a communicative, dedicated and results-oriented team player who enjoys working in an innovative, international and open-minded environment. You are comfortable working on multiple projects in parallel and have a sound personal judgement to make decisions during your daily work. Finally, we expect you to be fluent in written and spoken English.
