Odense M
The Centre for Nano Optics (www.sdu.dk/nano-optics) at the Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark, in Odense seeks a suitable candidate for a 3-year position as PhD Fellow within the area of Experimental Quantum Plasmonics with the starting date: June 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is supported by the Villum Kann Rasmussen Grant (2019-2024) for Research in Technical and Natural Sciences.
The PhD project
The proposed project is concerned with experimental investigations and theoretical studies of coupling phenomena and resonant interactions between quantum emitters and propagating and localized surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes supported by various plasmonic nanostructures, with the overall goal being to efficiently couple Purcell-enhanced single quantum emitters (primarily color centers in nanodiamonds, but quantum dots, defects in 2D materials, organic DBT nanocrystals are also under consideration) to SPP excitations that should also be efficiently coupled to free propagating modes or modes of dielectric waveguides.
The project goals include the development of experimental and computational tools for quantum plasmonics, realization of very high Purcell factors, efficient collection of emitted photons and strong coupling in plasmonic nanostructures as well as the contribution to further progress in understanding of fundamental physical phenomena involved in light-matter interactions at nanoscale. The overarching goal is to realize efficient single-photon sources with Purcell-enhanced emission rates producing streams of photons with well-defined polarization properties and phase fronts. Both fundamental and applied aspects of this research will be assessed from the perspectives of quantum plasmonics.
Profile
Potential candidates for the 3-year PhD fellowship are expected to have a relevant MSc degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) and experimental skills in at least one of the following areas: nanofabrication, advanced electromagnetic modelling and optical characterization of plasmon-based nanophotonic structures, including those operating in the single-photon regime.
As a PhD student, you will be carrying out the research under supervision of Prof. Sergey I. Bozhevolnyi and co-supervised by Dr. Shailesh Kumar.
Candidates should motivate their application in a cover letter. The application should also clearly state if there has been any preliminary contact/discussion with the supervisors.
Contact information
For more detailed information regarding the research planned, please contact Prof. Sergey I. Bozhevolnyi, phone: +45 6550 7341; e-mail: [email protected], as well as the university’s homepage: http//www.sdu.dk/nano-optics.
Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).
Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.
Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
The successful candidate will be enrolled at SDU in accordance with Faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order), read more here.
