Odense M

The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) in Odense invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Natural Products Chemistry.

The main aim of this postdoctoral project is to isolate and characterize all types of anti-inflammatory compounds from the herbal supplement Lito® Hyben that is based on the fruits of dog rose (Rosa canina) using a bioassay-guided chromatographic fractionation approach and to evaluate their anti-inflammatory effect in vitro. The anti-inflammatory activity of Lito® Hyben has been demonstrated in several in vitro and preclinical trials.

Previously anti-inflammatory galactolipids have been isolated from this herbal supplement, but these natural products are not very stable in the product. Thus, it is important to find more stable anti-inflammatory marker compounds that can contribute to the understanding of the anti-inflammatory activity of Lito® Hyben that can be used as biomarker compounds for the approval of Lito® Hyben as a herbal medicine with a documented anti-inflammatory activity for the use in the treatment of chronic anti-inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis with no side effects in contrast to non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs.

The project will be conducted in collaboration with Hyben Vital Aps.

We are seeking a highly motivated applicant to join the Natural Products Chemistry research unit for this project.

The ideal candidate has the following competences and skills:

  • A PhD in natural products chemistry or related disciplines with a strong background in analytical chemistry.
  • Hands-on experience with the isolation of small molecules using chromatographic techniques such as flash CC and preparative HPLC.
  • Hands-on expertise with LC-MS.
  • Documented research experience with the characterization of small molecules by mass spectrometry and NMR.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (English) for effective teamwork across disciplines.

Additional valuable skills:

  • Ability to design and implement experiments involving mammalian cell cultures.

Starting date: 1 October 2021 or soon thereafter. The position is for up to two years. Application deadline: 15 August 2021.
