Postdoc Position on the Ecophysiology of Ammonia-oxidizing Archaea in Oxygen Depleted Environments

A two-year postdoc position is available at the research unit Nordcee, Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark. The successful candidate will join a team of scientists studying the ecophysiology and ecology of ammonia-oxidizing archaea in oxygen limited environments funded by a Villum Young Investigator grant to Assistant Professor Beate Kraft.
The project:
Ammonia-oxidizing archaea are key players in the nitrogen cycle of the world’s oceans. They are frequently found in oxygen-depleted environments like marine oxygen-minimum zones or sediments though they are thought to have a strictly aerobic physiology. We found evidence for a so far undiscovered intra-aerobic metabolic pathway in a cultured representative.
The aim of the postdoctoral project is to further characterize the ecophysiology of oxygen production in ammonia-oxidizing archaea. Depending on the applicant’s background different research directions are possible such as:
Required qualifications:
Applicants need to have a PhD and a background in environmental microbiology, microbial physiology, or related fields demonstrated by scientific publications. We are looking for a highly motivated and curiosity-driven candidate. Working experience with stable isotope labelling techniques or with microsensor and optode measurements are of advantage. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
The expected starting date is 1 July 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. Application deadline: 15 April 2022.

- Identification of the enzymes catalyzing the different steps in the novel pathway.
