A PhD position is available in the group of Associate Professor Daniel Wüstner at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark, Odense. Invited are applications from outstanding candidates with a master’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or closely related fields. Fluency in Python and knowledge in Java are essential. The proposed starting date is 15th August 2022 or soon thereafter. Application deadline: 21 June 2022.
The Wüstner group integrates quantitative fluorescence microscopy and bioimage informatics with biophysics and cell biology to study transport processes in living cells. We are part of the Danish Molecular Biomedical Imaging Center (DaMBIC) and the Nikon Center of Excellence in Microscopy at the University of Southern Denmark, housing state-of-the art equipment for advanced bioimaging applications such as wide field, confocal and multiphoton microscopy, stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy and stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM). We are also very active in the field of bioimage analysis and have several workstations equipped with latest hardware for implementing deep learning and other machine learning approaches into image analysis pipelines.
As a PhD student in the Wüstner group, you will be engaged in an ambitious projects aimed at determining lipid trafficking pathways across in-vitro models of the blood brain barrier and their regulation. You will develop image analysis tools for improved analysis of live-cell imaging, multiphoton and super-resolution microscopy as well as X-ray microscopy data, with the ultimate goal to develop a 3D map of lipid transport pathways across brain endothelial cells. This also includes data-based modelling of intracellular transport dynamics.
The ideal candidate would have a documented background and experience in one or several of the following topics:
For further information please contact Associate Professor Daniel Wüstner ([email protected]).
Application, salary etc.
Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
Application must be made in the form of a Declaration of Interest including the following:
• A research proposal/description of your approach to the above project (max one page excluding references)
• A letter stating your specific interest, motivation and qualifications for the project in question (max. two pages) (please attach this under box "Application form")
• Detailed CV, including personal contact information
• Copies of diplomas, Bachelor as well as Master’s degree, including transcript of notes/grades
• At least two signed reference letters. Should your referees wish to send their letters directly to us, please have them use e-mail: [email protected] mentioning your name and the title of the position in the subject line. And please note that these also need to reach us before deadline.
