Odense M

The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a fully-funded 3-year PhD position in mechanical engineering located in Odense, Denmark with a preferred starting date of February 1st, 2023, or soon thereafter.

The PhD position is funded by SDU Maritime Research Platform, which was established in 2022 based on a donation from A/S Dampskibsselskabet Orient’s Fond. The platform consists of maritime research projects in four faculties across the University of Southern Denmark, mostly PhD and postdoc projects. All work packages in the project are related to the maritime sector with a special focus at the offshore industry. The work packages, though separate in their research focus, are interconnected and important to the project, as the breadth and interdisciplinarity of the initiative is very important. The topics cover a wide range of disciplines as e.g., sustainability, safety, risk, human factors, history, logistics, business, regulation, naval architecture, and maritime operations.

All partners connected to the platform must be willing to be part of the interdisciplinary network and actively participate in knowledge sharing. A part of the work will be performed in close connection with the industry.

About the PhD project
The PhD candidate will work actively under SDU Maritime research platform funded by A/S Dampskibsselskabet Orient’s Fond and University of Southern Denmark.

The main topic of the PhD project relates to vessel motion and vibrations, and their effect on the remaining useful life of the vessel and health and safety of the crew. Vessels operating in the offshore sector are heavily exposed, they operate in waters with strong winds and big waves, making the operation very complex. Such heavy usage will wear out the equipment very fast and, in some cases, also cause and accelerate damages. More investigation of the consequences for vessel and engine are needed.

Motion and vibration of the vessels also play a role for crew safety and for the work environment on board. How does motion and vibrations influence the daily work on board – and can better ways of operating the vessel be identified. Focus on safety, risk and the work environment are very important in this sector. This part of the project will be performed in close connection with a PhD student employed at the Faculty of Health, SDU.

About the candidate
We are looking for a highly motivated, creative, and ambitious student with a good command of English (written and spoken) who can work independently as part of a team. The candidate should have a master’s degree in engineering, preferably in mechanical engineering or naval architecture and a genuine interest in interdisciplinary research. The candidate should have two or more of the following capabilities: 1) knowledge about ship operation, 2) experience in experimental vibration analysis and structural dynamics, 3) experience on statistical/machine learning.

The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate his/her ambition to conduct high-quality research, present the results at international conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals. We expect the candidate to take part in the teaching activities of the section SDU Mechanical Engineering.

Research environment
SDU offers an interdisciplinary research environment with other PhD students where research programs are developed in close collaboration with industry.
