The Mads Clausen Institute (MCI) at the University of Southern Denmark (Odense Campus) invites applications for a two year postdoctoral fellowship within the research areas of quantum and nonlinear nano-optics. The application deadline is November 15, 2022, and the prospective starting date is January 2023.

The postdoc will be affiliated with the soon-to-be established Center for Polariton-Driven Light-Matter Interactions (POLIMA), which is a DNRF center of excellence – headed by Prof. N. Asger Mortensen – with cutting-edge fundamental research activities in the broad area of polaritons, including plasmonics and metasurfaces. Within the POLIMA, Prof. Joel D. Cox has established a group focusing on quantum and nonlinear nano-optics that theoretically explores nanoscale light-matter interactions at the interface of classical electrodynamics and quantum physics, with emphasis on the extreme spatial confinement of both light fields and matter to drive nonlinear and quantum optical phenomena in low-dimensional and atomic systems. For more information, please consult perspective papers (DOI: 10.1021/acs.accounts.9b00308 and DOI: 10.1002/adom.201901473). The POLIMA is closely interfacing the Center for Nano Optics (CNO) – headed by Prof. Sergey I. Bozhevolnyi – which has world-class nano optics and quantum optics labs, along with access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication and novel electron spectroscopy.

The present opening concerns a fully funded two-year postdoctoral fellowship.

We seek candidates possessing strong qualifications in theory, with a solid background in condensed-matter physics, quantum optics, nanophotonics, or related areas. The successful candidate will contribute to frontier research in areas where potentially both light and matter exhibit quantum mechanical behavior. Theory projects will benefit from expertise in ab-initio approaches to account for material electronic properties and collective excitations, and/or in quantum-field theory. Material platforms range from noble metals to 2D materials and artificial quantum light emitters such as quantum dots and defect centers in nanocrystals.

Successful applicants will hold a PhD degree in physics, electrical engineering, or a related discipline. Candidates about to complete their degree programme will also be considered and should attach a statement from their supervisors.

As a postdoctoral fellow, you will be carrying out research under supervision of Profs. Joel D. Cox and N. Asger Mortensen.

Candidates should motivate their application in a cover letter. The application should also clearly state if there has been any preliminary contact/discussion with the supervisor.

The filling of positions is supported by the DFF Sapere Aude program awarded by Independent Research Fund Denmark (principal investigator Cox) and the VILLUM Investigator Program awarded by the VILLUM Foundation (principal investigator Mortensen).
