Volunteer in Organizational Capacity Development in Zambia

AA Zambia is looking for a volunteer to support AA Zambia in conducting organisational assessments; develop and implement Organisational capacity development plans for selected partners working with affected communities to support resilience building. The aim will be to foster and optimize productivity and Organisational effectiveness in line with best practices. The volunteer will also support AA Zambia by liaising with and providing support to relevant partners organizations’ leadership and facilitate relevant capacity developing initiatives across the organizations. The volunteer shall work closely with the Head of Human Resource and Organization Development, Capacity Building Coordinators (Hub Coordinators) and Thematic Leads to enhance organisational development for local organisations engaged in humanitarian; to support them with development of systems and processes in line Core Humanitarian Standards.

The volunteer position is part of the EUAID Volunteer’s Initiative – an Initiative that brings volunteers and organisations together from different countries, providing practical support to humanitarian aid projects and contributing to strengthening local capacity and resilience of disaster-affected communities. A core focus is also to promote global solidarity and post-placement information work in Europe.

The placement period is 12 months, with duty station in the head office in Lusaka.

Volunteer Tasks

For the placement, the Volunteer will support localised disaster risk reduction in vulnerable communities by providing the following support:

  • Support the design and implementation of effective organisation development and capacity development needs assessment systems and tools
  • In cooperation with relevant AA staff, identify Organisational Development and capacity development needs of the partners in respective operational areas
  • Support the development of needs assessment for training and partners /staff development to enhance the effectiveness of employee performance in achieving the goals and objectives of the organisation
  • Support Monitoring and learning and together with relevant staff conduct periodic review (s) of organizational change progress and performance and provide feedback to staff and management on progress made on the agreed action plans
  • Identify and advise on best practices and lessons learned for incorporation into HR, Administration plans and partners’ capacity building plans
  • Advise in accordance with Core Humanitarian standards
  • Participate in and contribute to relevant in-country and cross-country learning and knowledge sharing events and processes within the ActionAid Federation, such as the Youth Community of Interest
  • Support communication and visibility of the EU AID Volunteer Initiative, also when back in Europe after deployment

Qualifications:

  • Degree in organizational development or similar,
  • English proficiency,
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Core Humanitarian Standards
  • Ability to design tools and conduct capacity needs assessment
  • Excellent analysis, writing and communication skills.
  • Patience and Problem-solving
  • Proactive and result oriented with the ability to work in a participatory and inclusive manner with peers, colleagues and local partners
  • Social media management and proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Must be able to evaluate the needs of an organization and create, implement and develop training programs that develop needed skills.
  • Strong intercultural skills, respect of others and diplomatic skills
  • Understanding and appreciating that this is a temporary position and thus strengthening the skills and competences of peers and colleagues is key in this placement
  • Strong motivation to volunteer with a social justice organisation
  • previous exposure to working in a developing context
  • Prior volunteer experience is an added advantage

As this volunteer is placed under the EU AID Volunteer Initiative the volunteer must be a citizen of the EU or a third country national who is a long-term resident in an EU Member State and must have a minimum age of 18 years

Terms and condition will follow those of EU AID Volunteers:

  • Monthly Subsistence Lump Sum of 424,33 € per month which intends to cover basic needs and local transport.
  • Monthly post-deployment resettlement of 100 € per month
  • Modest accommodation, Visa fees, insurance and airfare to and from the country of service
  • 2 days leave per month of voluntary activity + domestic holidays in the country of service
  • Work hours in accordance with ActionAid Zambia

Shortlisting and interviews on SKYPE with the candidates: August/September

Selected candidates from interviews will be obligated to participate in an online training module as well as a 9-12 day in-presence training in Europe as part of the selection process. More than one candidate for each position will be selected for training to support the development of a pool of validated candidates – however only one candidate will eventually be selected for this position.

Travel and training costs to participate in the in-presence training will be covered.

Placement start is expected to be November 2020
