Volunteer in Social Protection and Safety Nets
ActionAid International Kenya is looking for an experienced volunteer who will provide support to its Global Platform Training coordinator in developing Social Protection and Safety Nets curriculum and capacity for AAIK staff, young people volunteers and partners.
The placement period is for 6 months, with the duty station at the Global Platform, Laikipia County, Kenya.
ActionAid International Kenya is a non-partisan, non-religious development organisation and has been working in Kenya since 1972 to end poverty and injustices. It isamong the leading anti-poverty agencies working directly with over one million poor and excluded people in 15 counties in Kenya and has over 47 years of knowledge and experience working with poor communities.
Global Platforms are ActionAid’s worldwide network of training hubs for empowerment and activism. Global Platforms across the world implement and provide innovative trainings and capacity development for ActionAid staff, partners and youth who wish to take positive action in their societies. The Global Platforms are dynamic and inspiring environments where young people (aged 16-35) live and learn together, where they can think freely, develop their own ideas and connect, discuss and act on local, national and global political issues.
The volunteer position is part of the EUAID Volunteer’s Initiative – an Initiative that brings volunteers and organisations together from different countries, providing practical support to humanitarian aid projects and contributing to strengthening local capacity and resilience of disaster-affected communities. A core focus is further to promote global solidarity and post-placement information work in Europe.
Volunteer Tasks
Capacity Building
- Support the GP trainers in the implementation of social protection and safety net trainings
- Support the GP Training and Learning Coordinator on evaluating the Global platform empowerment activities and making operational recommendations.
- Support in review of existing manuals and generate training manuals for social protection and safety nets.
- In collaboration with the GP trainers organize internal social protection and safety nets awareness events.
- Support training of social protection and safety net ToT for GP Staff.
- Support GP Training Coordinator in development of appropriate training materials.
Knowledge sharing and learning
- Participate in and contribute to relevant in-country and cross-country learning and knowledge sharing events and processes within the ActionAid federation, such as the Youth Community of Interest.
- Support documentation of best practice and successful stories of change.
Communication and Awareness on the EU Aid Volunteers Initiative
- Promote local volunteerism in social protection and safety nets.
- Build solidarity across all humanitarian projects with EU volunteers within Kenya.
- Train local volunteers and the youth hub on organization and implementation of volunteer-based activities, when applicable.
- Promote partnerships and collaboration between local youth and European organizations.
- Draft and publish articles describing volunteer's experience in the field.
- Gather audio-visual materials to be used in a public awareness activity in the volunteer's local community in Europe.
Qualifications:
Studies
- University degree (BA) in International Development, Humanitarian Emergencies, Social Sciences, Political Science, International Relations or other relevant discipline;
Core competencies:
- Independent and proactive – able to work on one’s own and take initiative.
- Strong facilitation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Must be a positive role model to the young people.
- A strong commitment to ActionAid values and feminist leadership principles
- Able to build collaborative relationships
- Innovative – able to develop and innovate youth engagement activities.
Required voluntary work experience:
- Experience with social protection and safety net programmes is an added advantage.
- Experience in working with young people.
- Experience with motivating and supporting young people.
- Experience with participatory approach to youth engagements is desirable.
Personal qualifications:
- Independence
- Patience and tolerance
- Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability
- Demonstrates openness to change and ability to manage complexities
- Ability to work with limited resources
Language requirements:
- Fluency in English.
Minimum requirements:
- Willing to work in the country context and adapt to the local culture
- Willing to travel to local communities as per need
- Willingness to live under modest living conditions in solidarity with the people ActionAid International Kenya works with and for
- The volunteer must understand and adhere to international standards in humanitarian protection and accountability
As this volunteer is placed under the EU AID Volunteer Initiative the volunteer must be a citizen of the EU or a third country national who is a long-term resident in an EU Member State and must have a minimum age of 18 years.
Terms and condition will follow those of EU AID Volunteers:
- Monthly Subsistence Lump Sum of 515,95 € per month which intends to cover basic needs and local transport
- Monthly post-deployment resettlement of 100 € per month
- Modest accommodation, Visa fees, insurance and airfare to and from the country of service
- 2 days leave per month of voluntary activity + domestic holidays in the country of service
- Work hours in accordance with ActionAid International Kenya

Shortlisting and interviews on SKYPE with the candidates: August
Selected candidates from interviews will be obligated to participate in an online training module as well as a 9-12 day in-presence training in Europe as part of the selection process. More than one candidate for each position will be selected for training to support the development of a pool of validated candidates – however only one candidate will eventually be selected for this position.
Travel and training costs to participate in the in-presence training will be covered.
Placement start is expected to be November 2020
