Volunteer in Communications in Zambia
ActionAid Zambia, together with its youth activism and training hub (Global Platform), seek a volunteer to support their efforts to enhance their own capacity to effectively communicate and promote their programming work and achievements around women and youth leadership in the context of shrinking political and civic space and emergency response. Further, AA Zambia wants to enhance the capacity of youth and women in affected communities to be better able to communicate their own experiences and gain access to timely early warning systems packaged for the consumption of people in disaster prone area, thereby increasing resilience of communities. This includes supporting youth and women groups and their movements in developing/designing communication tools and packaging of messages in order to increase the awareness and appreciation of the struggles of vulnerable communities in disaster prone areas through enhanced communication and visibility.
The volunteer position is part of the EUAID Volunteer’s Initiative – an Initiative that brings volunteers and organisations together from different countries, providing practical support to humanitarian aid projects and contributing to strengthening local capacity and resilience of disaster-affected communities. A core focus is also to promote global solidarity and post-placement information work in Europe.
The placement period is 9 months, with duty station in the head office in Lusaka.
Volunteer Tasks
For the placement, the Volunteer will support localised disaster risk reduction in vulnerable communities by providing the following support:

As this volunteer is placed under the EU AID Volunteer Initiative the volunteer must be a citizen of the EU or a third country national who is a long-term resident in an EU Member State and must have a minimum age of 18 years

Shortlisting and interviews on SKYPE with the candidates: August/September
Selected candidates from interviews will be obligated to participate in an online training module as well as a 9-12 day in-presence training in Europe as part of the selection process. More than one candidate for each position will be selected for training to support the development of a pool of validated candidates – however only one candidate will eventually be selected for this position.
Travel and training costs to participate in the in-presence training will be covered.
Placement start is expected to be November 2020

Volunteer Tasks
For the placement, the Volunteer will support localised disaster risk reduction in vulnerable communities by providing the following support:
- Support in the implementation of a communication strategy, both Internal and External Communications
- Support in the creation and dissemination of written content & audio-visual materials
- Support in the development of communication tools and graphic materials according to institutional needs.
- Support in the coordination of all communication aspects for ActionAid’s events/activities
- Support in promoting awareness campaigns
- Support and participate in design of political and social advocacy actions carried out with partner institutions and AA Zambia
- Contribute to the update of the website and social media platforms (Facebook/Twitter).
- Participate in and contribute to relevant in-country and cross-country learning and knowledge sharing events and processes within the ActionAid Federation, such as the Youth Community of Interest
- Support communication and visibility of the EU AID Volunteer Initiative, also when back in Europe after deployment
Qualifications:
- Degree in communications, journalism or similar,
- English proficiency
- Excellent analysis, writing and communication skills.
- Proactive and result oriented with the ability and focus on co-creating with peers, colleagues and local partners
- Social media management, Microsoft Office and social media analysis tools.
- Basic photography, Video and photo editing skills.
- Proficiency in word press, social media management and graphic design will be appreciated.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Strong intercultural skills, respect of others and diplomatic skills
- Understanding and appreciating that this is a temporary position and thus strengthening the skills and competences of peers and colleagues is key in this placement
- Strong motivation to volunteer with a social justice organisation
- previous exposure to working in a developing context
- Prior volunteer experience is an added advantage
As this volunteer is placed under the EU AID Volunteer Initiative the volunteer must be a citizen of the EU or a third country national who is a long-term resident in an EU Member State and must have a minimum age of 18 years
Terms and condition will follow those of EU AID Volunteers:
- Monthly Subsistence Lump Sum of 424,33 € per month which intends to cover basic needs and local transport.
- Monthly post-deployment resettlement of 100 € per month
- Modest accommodation, Visa fees, insurance and airfare to and from the country of service
- 2 days leave per month of voluntary activity + domestic holidays in the country of service
- Work hours in accordance with ActionAid Zambia
