Job description / Role

As an adviser you will

  • Provide direct support and develop capacity on key mandate and organisational areas to state actors with a human rights mandate (national human rights institutions (NHRIs) and governmental actors) primarily in Africa and the Middle East and North Africa.

The key mandate areas could include human rights monitoring and reporting; human rights-based law review and harmonization; human rights education (HRE); implementation of national human rights policy and national human rights action plans.

The key organizational areas could include organisational analysis and planning

  • Support NHRIs in engaging with human rights education including at a structural level by integrating human rights in formal education policy and curricula

  • Act as an expert on specific human rights (i.e disability rights, gender equality, economic, social and /or cultural rights)

  • Take the lead in the development of resources (i.e tool kits; e-learning for state actors with a human rights mandate

  • Provide advice and expertise to colleagues working directly with state actor and partners

Profile

We expect that you:

  • Are an expert in developing human rights capacity
  • Are an expert in HRE and in applying HRE principles
  • Have experience in long-term partnerships preferably with state actors and extensive experience as an adviser on human rights matters preferably in the Middle East and North Africa and /or Africa
  • Have experience in or an interest in working with distance learning tools and methodologies
  • Would like to learn about and apply in-depth concepts and methods
  • Are an excellent communicator both with external partners and internally with your colleagues
  • Can work in French and /or Arabic
  • Have strong coordination skills and can navigate and adapt to the priorities of partners
  • Are structured and reliable
  • Can contribute to strategy development within the Human Rights and Governance programme team
  • Can travel at least 40/50 days a year, more as required

Qualifications

  • MA degree in law, political science or sociology with a focus on human rights law or similar
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience working within the human rights field
  • A minimum of 5 years working with human rights capacity development and human rights education
  • Proven first-hand knowledge and experience of the international and regional human rights systems
  • It is a strong advantage if you have substantive expertise in disability rights, gender equality, economic, social or cultural rights, etc.
  • Languages: English is mandatory as this is the working language in the international division at DIHR. Either French or Arabic proficiency is mandatory. Danish is an asset.

Your department

You will work in the Human Rights Capacity department and will report to the Department Director. You will be part of the human rights and governance programme that currently implements projects in Ethiopia, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia, and that also contributes to regional and international networks and has a strong research focus.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The duty station will be Copenhagen. The position is full time, and salary and other conditions will be determined in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations with the possibility to negotiate individual supplements.

Employment will be dependent on the candidate’s ability to obtain a work permit in Denmark.
