Are you passionate about solving complex problems at the interface between R&D and large-scale manufacturing? Would you like to pave the way for solving the industrial challenges of the future using modelling & simulation? Then apply for this position as PhD Student in API Manufacturing Development at Novo Nordisk! The position This project is focused on the development of a method and application of in-silico tools using a process systems engineering (PSE) approach for sustainable process synthesis and design of bio-based pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. A bio-based pharmaceutical manufacturing process (raw material to product) for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) typically consists of 5 main stages; fermentation, recovery and purification (typically referred to as the core API process) and, solvent preparation and utility generation (typically referred to as the auxiliary systems). A major challenge is how to systematically generate and identify sustainable novel process designs related to the core API process and solvent preparation. More specifically, how to navigate, select and verify the best (optimal) unit-operations connected into one seamless process to have uninterrupted delivery of final API product. This research aims to address this challenge by exploring and providing innovation in how to synthesize and design future pharmaceutical process under uncertainty to be fast, flexible, moving at full-speed while being futuristic. The research includes the following tasks:
  • Categorization and consolidation of existing pharmaceutical processes
  • Categorization and consolidation of existing pharmaceutical processes including auxiliary processes.
  • Conceptual method generation and verification for:
    • Synthesis & design to obtain the design space.
    • Robust and risk-aware solutions (with respect to design uncertainty)
    • Innovation including experimental data at lab to full scale.

  • Application of method to design of an industrial pharmaceutical process.
  • Generation of a roadmap for future design of biopharmaceuticals
  • The expected outcome from this research will be a method that can become a standard within industrial manufacturing development for in-silico sustainable pharmaceutical process design in conjunction with experiments and unit-operation design.
  • For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study program, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education. The recruitment process will be conducted by the supervisor(s) from Novo Nordisk in collaboration with the DTU supervisor(s). The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs at DTU. The period of employment is 3 years. Qualifications You have, or are developing, the following qualifications:
  • An MSc degree, or equivalent, in the following subject areas: chemical/biochemical engineering, process engineering or equivalent
  • Domain knowledge in process systems engineering or modelling & simulation applied to process design, process dynamics or process optimization (for example from Master’s thesis)
  • Experience with equation/object-oriented programming. An asset but not a requirement would be familiarization with one or more of the following: Process simulation (PROII/Aveva Process Simulation, ASPEN Tech, INOSIM), Optimization (GAMS, PYOMO), Programming (Python, Julia or similar)
  • Curious and an appetite for developing AI/ML competences
  • Understanding of how to convey complex information to varying audiences
  • Motivated for solving complex problems applying a systems approach
