Frederiksberg C
Department of Geoscience and Natural Resource Management (IGN), Section of Landscape Architecture and Planning invites applicants for two PhD fellowships in monitoring, modelling and mapping nature-based recreation. The project is part of the research project VIMAS (Visitor monitoring and management in protected and recreational areas: new challenges, novel solutions for the Anthropocene) which is financed by the European Union’s MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS, Doctoral Networks (DN), Call: HORIZON-MSCA-2022-DN-01-01.
The two PhDs will be embedded in a network across the Nordic region with 8 other PhDs of the VIMAS project. Common workshops, seminars, training schools and temporary change of study location (environmental change) will be arranged and conducted. For a general description of the VIMAS project and description of all PhD positions, please visit the VIMAS project website: www.nmbu.no/en/research/projects/vimas#phd-projects
Please note that according to the MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS, Doctoral Networks’s mobility rules, PhD fellows must not have resided or carried out their main activity (e.g., work, studies) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.
Start date is (expected to be) 1 May 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The two PhD projects
PhD1: Application of Mobile Big Data/Social Media Data to monitor recreational visits to nature.
PhD1 will develop, apply, and discuss applications of aggregated and disaggregated location-based Big Social Media Data concerning where and when the visitation to recreational landscapes is changing and at which spatial and temporal scales. The work will focus on considerations of spatial/temporal scale, aggregation, and resolution of the raw data, as well as on appropriate fusion with other new and classic data sources, analysis, validation, and visualization/communication. Furthermore, potential for prediction/simulation of future use levels can be explored. Main Supervisor: Professor Hans Skov-Pedersen, [email protected].
PhD2: Advancing recreational monitoring and management by combining plural knowledge systems and diverse values through PPGIS for resilient visitor management in times of changes.
PhD2 will focus on the use of PPGIS (Public Participation GIS) that allows for collection of spatial explicit information on visitor preferences, values, and behaviours. The focus is on visitor perception, by addressing individual drivers and reasons of change (why), what they are changing (forms of change) and where such changes take place. The project will work with both spatial and temporal visitation patterns and draw on nature literacy, connection to nature, and disconnection from nature literature in terms of analyzing nature’s role for behavioural changes. Main Supervisor: Associate Professor Anton Stahl Olafsson, [email protected].
