The Human Rights, Business & Tech Department at the Danish Institute for Human Rights works at the crossroads between human rights and business, engaging with a range of strategic partners. These include national human rights institutions, national authorities, regional and international organisations, as well as businesses, financial institutions, and civil society.
As human rights and business adviser, your role will be to work with partners to support implementation of business and human rights frameworks and standards, in particular in Africa.

The position is full-time based in Copenhagen with significant international travel, with a weekly average of 37 hours. The salary and other conditions will be determined in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations with the possibility to negotiate individual supplements.

As human rights and business adviser, your role will be to work with partners to support implementation of business and human rights frameworks and standards, in particular in Africa.
ABOUT THE POSITION As an adviser you will:
- Work with national human rights institutions and other partners in select African countries in designing, planning, and implementing activities to foster responsible business conduct including supporting research, awareness raising, policy dialogues, legal analyses etc.
- Work with regional networks and strategic alliances on business and human rights to support responsible business conduct in the African region, including the development of content and logistics for multi-stakeholder events in the region.
- Develop training material and practical tools and methods to advance business and human rights tailored to different audiences including in light of new European legislations on mandatory human rights due diligence coming into force.
- Conduct research and analysis in the field of responsible business in Africa – including on topics such as natural resource management, access to remedy, and gender and women’s rights, and
- Take on project management responsibilities, including for deliverables, contract management, budgeting, and reporting.
YOUR BACKGROUND
- Masters level qualification in relevant field (e.g. law, human rights, political science, sustainable development) and in-depth knowledge of international frameworks on business and human rights.
- Strong communication skills and ability to manage partnerships in diverse country environments is essential. You should be comfortable in engaging with a variety of stakeholders at different levels and good at building relationships.
- Experience working with national human rights institutions, state institutions and/or civil society organisations in Africa.
- Project management skills including experience of contracting, budgeting, reporting to donors etc.
- Command of spoken and written English is essential. Proficiency in French is highly desirable. Proficiency in additional languages is a strong asset.
- Expertise in one of our focus areas including gender, access to remedy, energy transition or technology is a strong asset.
