Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

The University of Copenhagen is seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD fellow to commence 1 March 2024, at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR), University of Copenhagen.

About Us
Our researchers share a common purpose as they seek to transform the basic understanding of the mechanisms involved in cardiometabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge towards new prevention and treatment strategies.

The Center has around 260 employees, spread across 21 research groups and 5 technology platforms, who work in a vibrant international research environment with a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Center’s research has resulted in seminal discoveries as to how genes, hormones, and environmental factors influence metabolic health and disease throughout life. You can read more about CBMR at www.cbmr.ku.dk.

Our Research
The Zierath Group investigates the interactions between intrinsic biorhythms and external perturbations such as exercise and nutrient provision to identify novel translational strategies for prevention and treatment of metabolic disease. You can read more about the Zierath Group here.

Project Description
You will be part of a project investigating how mitochondrial metabolism is controlled across the circadian cycle. Our preliminary evidence implicates mitophagy, the turnover of mitochondria, in the control of liver metabolism in mice. This project will build upon that foundational knowledge to investigate the environmental cues and molecular transducers that regulate circadian mitochondrial metabolism. In addition, we will investigate how this process may be dysregulated in disease states such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, using animal models and human clinical samples.

You will join a multi-disciplinary research team working on basic and applied research questions related to circadian rhythms, metabolism and exercise. Your tasks will be to support the research endeavours within the group by performing wet-lab-based experiments to accelerate the delivery of our programme of research. For example, these tasks could encompass microscopy, qPCR experiments, immunoblotting, and genotyping of our transgenic animal lines.

Principal supervisor isProfessor Juleen Zierath, [email protected].

Start: 1 March 2024

Duration: 3 years as PhD fellow.

Profile
The PhD fellowship is aimed at early-career researchers with a basic science background.

  • Experience and knowledge in microscopy, particularly confocal microscopy
  • Certified with FELASA laboratory animal science
  • You have an active interest in metabolic research
  • You have proven an ability to envision, plan and execute a research project
  • Excellent team-working skills
  • Good English skills, written and spoken

Desired skills:

  • Experience studying mitochondrial biology
  • Experience in proteomics, particularly in sample preparation
  • Additional wet-lab skills (e.g. qPCR, immunoblotting etc) are desirable
  • Previous experience managing breeding and experimental projects in rodents
  • Experience studying the mito-qc mouse model is desirable

Eligibility
