We are offering a fully funded 3-year PhD fellowship on Prenatal exposure to particulate matter and brain aging which is scheduled to start 1 February 2024.
The Project: In this project, you will explore the long-term neurological consequences of environmental particulate matter exposure on the aging of the nervous system using rodent models. You will use a wide range of techniques including electrophysiology, neuroanatomy and behavioural testing. The project is a collaboration between The National Research Centre for the Work Environment in Copenhagen, the Department of Public Health and the Department of Neuroscience at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

The principal supervisor at the University of Copenhagen is Associate Professor Claire Francesca Meehan and the principal supervisor at The National Research Centre for Work Environment is Senior researcher, affiliated Professor Karin Sørig Hougaard.

Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD student at SUND are to:
Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a Bachelors degree a biological/ molecular field and a Master’s degree in Environmental Science or equivalent, experience with handling rodents in the context of toxin exposure studies (including FELASA or equivalent), and knowledge of particle toxicology.
Certified copy of original Master of Science diploma and transcript of records in the original language, including an authorized English translation if issued in other language than English or Danish. If not completed, a certified/signed copy of a recent transcript of records or a written statement from the institution or supervisor is accepted.

Please note that we might ask you to obtain an assessment of your education performed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

You will be based in both the Panum Institute in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Copenhagen and the National Research Centre for Work Environment also in Copenhagen.
Terms of employment
The employment as a PhD fellow is full time (37 working hours per week in average) and for 3 years.
It is conditional upon the applicant’s successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Enrolment at the Graduate School requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant (for more information, please see https://healthsciences.ku.dk/phd/guidelines/).
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension, and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins at DKK 28,993 /approx. EUR 3,887 (October 2023-level) plus pension.

Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD student at SUND are to:
- Carrying through an independent research project under supervision.
- Completing PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approximately 30 ECTS points.
- Participating in active research environments including a stay at another research team.
- Obtaining experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
- Teaching and disseminating your knowledge.
- Writing a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project

- Experience with intratracheal instillations in rodents
- Experience in particle toxicology
- Experience with molecular biology methods including qPCR, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity assays
- Knowledge in the field of neurodegeneration

- Excellent English skills, written and spoken.
