Who are we?
The Safety, Risk & Compliance Secretariat comprises a variety of operational and compliance functions. The Secretariat hosts the Safety Unit, Risk Management, and several Global Specialists, working within selected risk and compliance management areas in DRC’s international operations. The primary responsibilities of the Secretariat are to provide the organisation with high-quality support and gatekeep all areas on, Safety, Risk & Compliance management policies, and systems and training that allows prioritization of compliance and risk management efforts.
The Secretariat works towards this objective by facilitating the identification of risks across the organisation, be the custodian for policies, procedures, and tools developed to handle risks. The work of the Secretariat enables DRC governance to pursue opportunities and organizational objectives where identified risks are managed. The Secretariat provides direction, support, and training within the existing Safety, Risk & Compliance management frameworks and assures their continued consolidation and development.
About the job
Positioned in the Secretariat, the compliance specialist works to support the effective management of compliance risks in DRC’s international operations, supporting DRC’s firm commitment to accountability and integrity to risk management, audit, anti-corruption, prevention of fraud and regulatory frameworks when working in sanctioned countries.
The Compliance Specialist works with the effective management of anti-terrorism, sanctions, fraud, corruption, and other risks in DRC’s international operations in close cooperation with numerous internal stakeholders across DRC HQ departments and field operations.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Custodian for DRC anti-corruption policy and compliance to regulatory frameworks.
- Drafting, developing, launching, and rolling out compliance policies in collaboration with core peer group and organizational stakeholders and key partners and donors.
- Drafting, developing, launching, and rolling out DRC compliance policies in the Operations Handbook (Quality Standards, Minimum Operational Procedures, awareness-raising, communication, training, tools) in collaboration with core peer group and organizational stakeholders.
- Monitoring of DRC’s compliance with internal and external regulations and procedures within the area of expertise.
- Providing regular advisory services and support to colleagues and management in HQ and Field in area of expertise, including DRC-defined Anti-Terror Policy red lines, donor negotiations, compliance, and relations
- Participating and representing DRC, when possible, in external fora and with key external stakeholders (e.g., other NGOs, Donors) related to DRC policy positions on compliance and areas of tension with regards to humanitarian principles, and reporting back to management and other relevant stakeholders
- Policy development and compliance advice related to international and donor-specific sanctions regimes.
- Internal and external reporting guidelines and support collaborations with HR, Finance, Supply Chain, Programme and the Code of Conduct Team.
- Support and inform internal and external DRC due diligence and audit processes.
- Provision of quarterly induction sessions at HQ on Safety, Risk & Compliance Regulatory and Support Framework.
About you
To be successful in this role, we expect you to have substantial previous experience working with compliance in the humanitarian sector or a related field and to possess a strong ethical, humanitarian, legal, business and financial acumen. You must be an agile team-oriented colleague able to handle – at times – intense work pressure, with a strong commitment to humanitarian principles. You will need to be able to multi-task and cope with competing demands under tight deadlines and establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment in the role of Safety, Risk & Compliance Specialist.

Moreover, we also expect the following:
Required
- Master’s degree in Law, Compliance, Risk Management or related field relevant to the position
- Minimum 5 years of experience in compliance & ethics
- Experience with anti-terrorism, anti-corruption, anti-fraud, sanctions regimes and other policy and risk areas relevant to the humanitarian sector
- Experience with policy development and implementation as well as risk management.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills
- A stable and robust character with excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
- Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
- Proven ability to plan and prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Effective report writing skills.
- Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to train and convey information to non-expert staff.
- Advanced user of Microsoft Office
Desirable
- Previous experience in the international humanitarian and/or development sector
- Exposure to audit, due diligence or compliance programmes
- French, Spanish or Danish language skills
We offer
Contract length: Permanent
Workplace: Copenhagen (desired, but other locations can be negotiated)
Start date: September
Salary and conditions will be in accordance with the agreement between DRC and AC (fuldmægtig level). This is a national position for which local terms and conditions apply.
Please note that you need to have the right to work in Denmark (through nationality or existing work visa) in order to be considered for this role.
