Kongens Lyngby

The Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (DTU Construct), Technical University of Denmark currently has an opening for a PhD position with focus on generative artificial intelligence (AI) in crystal orientation space for the generation of super-realistic digital representative microstructures. If you want to establish your career as a scientist in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) and are looking for a foundation to realize your ambitions, this PhD position is for you. The PhD project will be supervised at DTU Construct and DTU Compute and involves esteemed collaboration partners at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany, and UC Santa Barbara, USA.

Engineering of the microstructure of metals and alloys by tuning chemical compositions and manufacturing processes enables development of new alloys with unparalleled properties. Given a virtually infinite design space, rapid discoveries must rely on computational materials design that operates on digital representations of microstructures. To enhance the predictive capabilities of computational design workflows, the advertised PhD project will leverage generative AI in crystal orientation space to generate super-realistic digital representative microstructures.

Responsibilities and qualifications
If you have a passion for interdisciplinary research, a background in computer science, physics, or materials science, and knowledge in generative AI and/or computational materials science, you may be the person we are looking for. You will work alongside a Postdoctoral researcher, your supervisors, and international collaborators. The results of your research will contribute to the development of autonomous Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), which aims at significantly accelerating and reducing the cost of materials development for the design of superior, cheaper, and more sustainable products.

Responsibilities:

  • Investigate the suitability of different crystal orientation representations for efficient and accurate operation within AI models
  • Develop pre-processing pipelines for the generation and processing of digital representative microstructures
  • Implement, train and validate different generative AI models for the generation of microstructure images and crystal orientation maps
  • Optimize the performance of generative AI models by investigating the effect of model architecture and data representations
  • Disseminate your key findings in cutting-edge materials science and engineering journals and on relevant international materials science conferences

Qualifications:

  • You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree
  • You should be experienced in programming, ideally in Python and/or MATLAB
  • Your background should lie within the fields of computational materials engineering/science, physics and/or data science

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
