Kongens Lyngby
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Ph.D. candidate to join our team and work on our Neuro-Lightning project funded by Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond (DFF) Sapere Aude Grant. The project aims to understand the plasma physics of lightning on microsecond time scales using neuromorphic imaging techniques, a new technique developed for use in other areas but has yet to be applied to lightning research.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with researchers in Denmark, Spain, Switzerland, and France to explore the inner plasma physics of lightning using a newly designed optical imaging system based on neuromorphic imaging techniques. You will participate in designing, building, and calibrating a multispectral neuromorphic imaging system to measure natural and laser-triggered lightning at the Säntis Tower in Switzerland. The project is a collaboration between DTU Space, Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (IAA)-CSIC, and École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). You will be co-supervised by a professor from EPFL in Switzerland, where you will spend your external research stay.
Responsibilities and qualifications
You will focus on the first application of the multispectral neuromorphic camera in a close-range lightning experiment and compare its performance with that of conventional cameras to characterize the optical features of streamers and leaders in natural and laser-trigged lightning. Your primary tasks will be to:
The candidate in some of the following areas is expected:
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .
