Technical Services Manager to Biomason – Denmark

Biomason is the only company in the world employing biology to produce cement commercially. Since 2012, they have used microorganisms to grow sustainable, structural biocement® in ambient temperatures, harnessing the power of biotechnology to reinvent traditional cement and offer a planet-friendly alternative. Biocement will eliminate 25% of the concrete industry’s global carbon emissions by 2030.
Biomason is ready to launch their production in collaboration with IBF in their manufacturing facilities in Ikast, Denmark. To support the start-up of production equipment, technical services, fermentation, and manufacturing, Biomason is looking to build a specialist team that you will head, and which will be the link between the pioneering knowledge in the US, and manufacturing in Denmark – and later in Europe.
To support the fermentation and manufacturing processes and technology transfer to Denmark, we are looking for a Technical Services Manager, who in short will be responsible for ensuring a technology transfer, biology, and non-biology, in Biomason’s collaboration with IBF. You are not expected to be a deep biology expert, but instead, demonstrate a broad technical insight and hopefully with experience from cement, concrete and/or biology. You will of course receive intensive onboarding.
Location will be in Ikast, Denmark, where Biomason has a manufacturing partner through their partnership with IBF.
Your role
In your role as Technical Services Manager, you will act as Biomason’s representative in the technology and process transfer to their partner. While overseeing this, you will also receive intensive onboarding and be supported by Biomason US, and all is intended to dress you up to continue a European expansion in future. The collaboration with IBF marks an important step for Biomason in Europe, and you will have a unique influence on this together with a dedicated team that will continue to grow. In this role, you will report directly to the Global COO stationed in the US. Your key tasks will include:
- Support of the rapid expansion of EU biological cement production capacity through the external scale-up and technology transfer to new and/or existing factories, starting with IBF in Ikast
- Manage multiple projects with external sites in different EU regions at different stages in the technology transfer process – and lead a team of technical experts to achieve the objectives
- Develop and organize technology transfer documentation and training materials
- Qualify technologies and products at external sites through the use of data driven business processes and documentation
- Continuously improve customers quality, costs, cycle time and delivery performance
- Partner cross-functionally with chemists, biologists, and engineers to develop robust documentation describing operational processes and specifications
- Coordinate closely with US based Engineering and R&D teams on scale-up challenges, research targets and priorities, and new discoveries
Your profile
We expect you to be an experienced leader, who balances between motivating and engaging others, and still also having a certain degree of technical interest. In your work, you are used to dealing with multiple stakeholders, communicate complexities in a simple way, and to be clear on the direction that is best to follow. In your actions and communication, you demonstrate a good balance between technology and commercial interests, understanding the need for quick problem-resolution and being a positive role model – also when things do not go as expected.
In your work, you combine your distinct personal and leadership skills with following professional qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 5-10 years’ experience working with technology in a production environment
- Significant demonstrated experience in leading technology transfer and field engineering services and in taking tech transfer to production scale
- Preferably experience from an industry that works with biology, cement, or concrete
- Scale-up experience with project management and collaboration and with tight deadlines.
- Experience in developing training materials and performing necessary training
- Flexibility in travelling up to 20% (up to 40% in the 2nd year), doing site support for critical start-up and launch trials across Europe
