Project Manager – Early-stage product development

You will be part of our Project Execution Unit that consists of a Director and 6 experienced Project Managers including an agile coach. We are responsible for leading cross-functional projects and our project portfolio consists of projects within innovation and product development, quality & regulatory compliance, market & customer development, operational excellence & efficiency projects etc.
Projects are managed in a matrix organization, according to a stage gate project model, influenced by Agile principles.
To strengthen our team, we are looking for a Project Manager to lead and drive early-stage Medical Device product development projects - from ideation to final product design. You will play a key role delivering on our business strategy, developing new products for the surgery market, working closely with the project owner - VP of New Business Development.
You will be assessing user needs and develop ideas and concept directions with your project team of specialists. You will describe and present the value proposition and associated business case and continue into concept and design development phases.
A strong combination of commercial and technical understanding, and ability to work cross organizational with our international partner and distributor/customer Ethicon in the US is key for being successful in this role. Our collaboration with Ethicon is a solid and strong strategic partnership.
Your role
Your role is to lead early-stage product development projects and teams, typically, with a high drive, collaborative mindset and strong skills within product concept and design development.
The role requires a leader capable of building and coaching teams for successful delivery to target, but also to be part of developing our processes and ways of working in early product development phase. The environment is dynamic, and we learn fast and take decisions that may require technical skills from temporary external support. Your role is highly valued, and you will have a strong mandate and independence in your daily work and the decisions you make to keep moving and pushing forward.
- Responsibility for an ongoing early-stage product development project, with a product concept to be defined in near future, and maturation of additional early innovation project ideas in collaboration with Ethicon
- Drive planning, execution, risk and change management for respective projects
- Form, build and lead the project team to bring structure and facilitate cross-functional collaboration to ensure accountability and drive for results
- Reporting to project owner (sponsor VP), project steering group, as well as internal and external stakeholders on progress and challenges
- Time and resource planning and follow up, managing project finances and resourcing to manage the total delivery
- Independently drive the partnership with Ethicon’s project organization and key stakeholders for respective projects
- Ensuring the early-stage product development documentation and regulatory requirements follow our internal processes to enable later stage of development
- Participation in best practice and active development of the Project Model including agile project management
About you
You have a strong drive, and a collaborative mindset and are experienced with leading early-stage product development, i.e. experience with concept, user needs and value proposition assessments to drive the value proposition/business case of a new technology or product. You have experience from a highly regulated industry such as biotech, life science or medical devices. You are used to operating in a dynamic and changing environment, taking ownership. You have strong communication and stakeholder management skills and find yourself comfortable communicating at various organizational levels in a company.
- Experience within early-stage product development
- Experience as Project Manager, Consultant or Leader with international stakeholder management and working cross-functionally
- Strong skills in forming, building, and leading project teams in matrix organizations
- Understanding of the complexity of early-stage development process involving co-creation and idea generation with specialists leading to a solid value proposition/business case
- Scientific curiosity and a pragmatic approach to finding solutions engaging with engineers and specialists
- Strong interpersonal skills, self-starting and collaborating personality
- Strong oral/written communication skills in English
- Ability to think strategically ahead and anticipate consequences in projects
- Preferably experience with external business partners or direct customers in projects
- Good financial understanding for your projects
- Structured, good overview and ability to deep dive into detail when necessary
- Minimum bachelor’s degree preferably master’s degree
