Frederiksberg C
The Department of Food and Resource Economics opens two postdoc positions of 24 months each.
The postdocs will conduct research within the project, Conjuring Urban Legality, managed by Christian Lund and Mattias Borg Rasmussen.
Urban development often starts out in illegality and only subsequently becomes legal. It happens not by legislation or planning, but by conjuring up legality, that is, through material and symbolic strategies that produce the appearance of institutionalized social orders. We explore this counter-intuitive proposition by investigating how informal urban settlements gradually formalize and become legal in the eyes of the population and government in mid-size and large cities in Latin America and South and Southeast Asia.
Conjuring Urban Legalitywill conduct research on contentious processes of land appropriation in urban settings that experience urban growth, increasing value of property, new institutionalization of residency, and, therefore, increased competition. The projectinquiries into the dynamics of property-making by investigating the mutual constitution of land and water rights at the urban frontier. Pre-packaged data for this research is not available. Our analyses therefore require original, institutional, historical, and field based, qualitative and quantitative data collection. Long-term fieldwork for data collection is necessary.
The postdocs will conduct independent fieldwork in their preferred locality and are expected to participate actively in the other project activities.
Successful applicants are likely to have a PhD in Anthropology, Development Studies, Geography, Sociology, Political Science or similar. Relevant language skills are an advantage.
The postdoc’s duties will include research within the field of Global Development as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.
