The Saxo Institute, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Ethnology starting on 1 March 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

This is a fixed-term position for 24 months of 75 % employment. Depending on teaching needs within the ethnological degree programs at the institute and the qualifications of the successful candidate, there is apossibility of increasing the rate of employment to include teaching activities.

Job content
The postdoc project will form a part of the Research project Disrupted Temporalities a joint venture between the ethnological departments at the universities of Copenhagen, Denmark and Åbo Academy, Finland, the folklife archive at Norsk Folkemuseum, Norway, and with Lund University, Sweden as lead partner of the project, which is funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, Sweden. The successful candidate will be part of the research team and one of four post-doctoral researchers, based in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The group of postdocs will have main responsibilities for archival studies analysing responses to inquiries collected during the Covid-19 pandemic supplemented with follow-up ethnographic fieldwork (including questionnaires, diaries, and in-depth interviews) on how crises disrupt everyday temporalities and destabilize vernacular understandings and practices of pasts, presents, and futures.

The successful candidate will be based at the Saxo Institute in Copenhagen and must be willing to work in the department on a day-to-day basis. Moreover, the candidate is also expected to work closely together with the research team and to take part in project activities (meetings, monthly seminars, conferences) hosted at Lund University, Sweden and by the other project partners. The postdoc is also expected to co-author articles, book chapters and to present findings in papers at international conferences and in podcasts.

Qualification requirements
Appointment as a postdoc presumes research qualifications on at least PhD level. Applicants must document advanced competences within ethnographic fieldwork and/or within studies in folklife archival questionnaires and responses, and preferably within vernacular notions and practices of pasts, presents, and futures. Furthermore, the successful candidate must be able to conduct ethnographic fieldwork and analyse material within the Scandinavian languages (Danish, Norwegian and/or Swedish).

Applications may be written in Danish or English and must include the following attachments:

  1. Application letter/cover letter (max. one page)
  2. CV (max. two pages)
  3. Documentation of qualifications (certificates/PhD diploma, Master’s diploma)
  4. Complete and numbered list of publications (attached publications marked with *).
  5. A project description, including the relationship to previous research also accounting for experience with research organisation, research collaborations, international relations and any external/intersectoral collaborations (max. two pages).
  6. Documentation of teaching competencies/teaching portfolio (see the UCPH guidelines for teaching portfolios here) and research dissemination if any.
  7. Publications. Applicants may choose a maximum of two publications for assessment. Publication dates must be clearly marked on the publication list. The publications must be uploaded as attachments.

Should any material submitted consist of work with named co-authors, or work that is otherwise the result of collective academic endeavours, the extent of the applicant’s contribution to the work must be clearly stipulated. The faculty may ask for a signed statement from the co-authors stipulating the extent and nature of each individual’s contribution.

Only material in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and English can be expected to be assessed.

Assessment criteria
Applicants will primarily be assessed in relation to their research qualifications, including their publications, ability to conduct independent research and participate in research collaborations, and their experience of research management. In addition, the applicant’s research plan and research potential will be assessed in relation to the overall project described above.

Teaching qualifications are not a requirement, but if the postdoc is interested in the possibilities of teaching activities and have relevant competences, then documented teaching experience may be included in the overall assessment.

Appointment procedure
After the application deadline, the Head of Department selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the appointment committee. All applicants are notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment. The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee tasked with carrying out an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Applicants are ultimately offered the opportunity of commenting on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalized.

Remuneration and terms of employment
The appointment is for a fixed term of 24 months and 75% employment and will be made in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). In addition, a total pension contribution of 17.1% of salary and pensionable supplements will be allocated. It will be possible to negotiate further supplements on the basis of qualifications.
