Plant and Environmental Sciences Department (PLEN) at Faculty of Science, the University of Copenhagen is looking for a Research Assistant within the Plant Nutrition group, financed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation with effect from 1 January 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter until 31 May 2024.
About us
Research at PLEN covers topics within Agriculture, Biotechnology and Environment. The department is divided into nine sections dealing with a wide range of subjects. Focus is on plants, animals, soil and microorganisms. The Plant Nutrition group´s research objective is to provide knowledge, which can be used to increase the sustainability of agriculture, by conducting both basic and applied research to increase the ability of plants to acquire essential plant nutrients. In the recent five years, the research group has worked towards this objective through fundamental studies on how nanoparticles can be tailored to interact with plant tissue and thereby improve the uptake and assimilation of essential mineral ions. The vision is to provide the scientific basis for the next generation of massively improved fertilizers to improve nutrient use efficiency in crops for the benefit of farmers economy, environment and climate.
Tasks
The position is embedded into the BioComFert project. In the project, we study the processes controlling transport of plant nutrient contained in nanoparticles (NPs) across stomata, to enable us to produce the next generation crop fertilizers, which are more efficient, sustainable and climate friendly than the current ones. We want to improve our understanding of how NP transport is regulated by leaf surface anatomy, pore chemistry and microclimate. The overall purpose is to be able to manipulate the transport processes and optimize them using the physicochemical properties of selected NPs. Your role will be to support the research performed in this project.
Your task will include
We expect
We are looking for candidates with a solid plant science, biology background. Candidates should be highly motivated and conscientious, with a strong interest in cross-disciplinary science. Applicants for the position should ideally meet the following specific requirements:
We offer
The successful candidate will be working in a large cross-disciplinary research project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. In the project, a group of chemists, physicists, materials scientists, plant scientists and agronomists from University of Copenhagen, Technical University of Denmark and McGill University in Canada will develop a novel generation of biocompatible and sustainable NP-based fertilizers with superior abilities to deliver mineral nutrients to crops in a timely and more resource efficient manner. To achieve this very ambitious goal we need to understand the pathways for NP uptake and how they interact with plant cells at the mechanistic level. This knowledge will allow us to tailor NPs with smart properties to enhance nutrient uptake and utilization in metabolism.
Our research ambitions are high and we strive to publish our work in leading journals. The research environment is vibrant, friendly, collaborative and international, consisting of scientists and students with diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. Our research group consists of +15 motivated scientists at different stages in their career, which enables sparring on how to shape a successful academic career.
Terms of salary and employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
Negotiation for salary supplement is possible. The working time are 37 hours per week on average.
