Project description
Selection of the optimal treatment strategy within Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) can be complex and difficult. IBD markedly affects the life quality of the patients and their families, and represents a significant burden on society due to, amongst others, lost educational opportunities, absenteeism, and health care expenses. The disease phenotype varies enormously between patients. Hence, there is a need for reliable biological markers with diagnostic and prognostic value, with vast potential to improve disease management and select the most appropriate drug at a specific time point.

This phd-study aims to develop biomarkers for discriminating between various disease trajectories to optimize diagnosis and clinical management of IBD.

Data from Danish registry archives will be used to distinguish between specific IBD disease trajectories. Such data will then form the basis for selected biological material for proteomics and (pharmaco)-genomics investigations in the search for biological biomarkers for clinical use. In the end, this will lead the way for Personalized Medicine. Data will be based on material collected at various time points in relation to the disease course (before diagnosis, drug treatment, etc.).

The outcome of the study will contribute to improve IBD health care, qualify of life and reduce economic resources. Moreover, the results will be part of the fundament for development and implementation of Personal Medicine.

Research environment
The Research Unit of Molecular Diagnostic and Clinical Research (MOK) is dedicated to evolve and implement Personal Medicine by applying in depth molecular, lifestyle and clinical characteristics of patients with IBD. Personal Medicine is the center of the research, where various subject areas meet in combination using multifaceted methods. In MOK, we have three focus areas, which prioritize elite research environment, staff and external funding.

You will become a member of a small, ambitious research team with various backgrounds (medical doctor, molecular biology, pharmacy, health research), and you will be in close contact with other PhD students. You will be affiliated with the Department of Gastroenterology, Molecular Diagnostics and Clinical Research Unit (MOK) situated at Hospital Sønderjylland in Aabenraa.

Qualifications
We are seeking an excellent and highly motivated individual with a relevant degree (MD, MSc. Pharm etc.). Applicants with experience within the field of IBD and Personal Medicine will be preferred. Additionally, applicants with demonstrated publication experience will be prioritised.
Currently, part of the PhD funding has been granted, but to secure the remaining economic costs, the successful PhD candidate must apply for further funding.

Supervisor
Prof. Vibeke Andersen (MOK / University of Southern Denmark (SDU))
Post.Doc Trine Andresen (MOK / SDU)
One or more additional supervisors will be allocated according to candidate competences.
