The GLOBE Institute invites applications for a Full Professorship in Planetary Sciences and Planet Formation at the Section for Star and Planet Formation (STARPLAN) to commence as soon as possible.

Description of the Institute

The Globe Institute is an international node of scientific excellence, comprising five research sections as well as research centres of excellence. The research is multidisciplinary and the scientific foci concern: The origins and evolution of stars and planets; the origins and evolution of life and Earth’s ecosystems; the origins and evolution of human diversity; and the origins, evolution, and treatment of disease. The Globe Institute also focus on transforming scientific advances in basic research into societal outputs by: 1-developing world-class multidisciplinary university level education; 2-Conducting outreach to the public; 3-Providing fact-based information for public stakeholders, policy-making, and government; and 4-Integrating basic scientific advancements into applied solutions for the benefit of societal development, medical treatment, food production, and forensics.

The Section for Star and Planet Formation is multidisciplinary focusing on understanding the formation of planetary systems, including the Solar System, using a multidisciplinary approach that combines astronomy, astrophysics and cosmochemistry.

Job description

The duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfil other tasks requested by the Institute.

The full professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications

We seek an experienced researcher in the field of planet formation, working on theoretical models for the formation of minor planetary bodies (planetesimals) and their subsequent growth to fully-formed planets. The ideal candidate is expected to have a strong background in theoretical and computational models of planet formation. We are particularly interested in expertise on hydrodynamical models of planetesimal formation through the streaming instability and in developing the pebble accretion theory for planetary growth. A strong internationally recognised research record and an outstanding publication history is required. The candidate should have experience in supervising PhD students and postdocs. We are particularly interested in candidates with a cross-disciplinary research profile that may allow them to work at the interface between the disciplines of cosmochemistry and astrophysics. In addition, the candidate must have a documented ability to lead a research group and secure external funds at the highest international level.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher-training programme is required.

The successful applicant should be able to document

  • Research qualifications at the level that can be achieved by satisfactorily completing a period of employment as an assistant professor/postdoc, but may also be obtained in other ways
  • Teaching qualifications and pedagogical competencies
  • Research-based teaching
  • The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

Gross annual, commencing salary is currently DKK 733,411 for full professors including an annual supplement (including pension DKK 107,099).

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

Managerial and outreach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.
