Professor of Past Climate and Life Evolution
Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen
Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management is hiring a Professor of Past Climate and Life Evolution.
The position aims at strengthening and profiling research and education in the processes that have determined climate change, environment and evolution of life during Earth’s history with a particular focus on utilizing sedimentary systems for extraction of information of how these Earth systems have changed on different time scales.
The successful candidate should have a foundation in geology and be able to demonstrate a strong research profile within a range of topics that are key to our understanding, modelling, projection and quantitative assessment of changes in Earth’s climate history, environment and life evolution based on analysis of sedimentary archives. Documented experience with data sampling in the field and/or laboratory analysis is considered advantageous.
As full professor, you are expected to be an internationally recognized researcher that has contributed significantly to the research fields. You should have demonstrated ability for attracting external research funding as well as having experience with research leadership, including mentoring of early career researchers.
You are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon your own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. Moreover, you are expected to have shown leadership in developing and implementing educational programmes within the research field.
As a full professor you are expected, in addition to conducting your own research, to play a leading academic role in accordance with the university’s criteria of merits. You are expected to drive and inspire the development of the research field, initiate and conduct significant research applications and explore the cross-disciplinary potential within the department and the University of Copenhagen. You must teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, conduct assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. You may also contribute to the development and execution of continued education programmes for non-university partners in government, society and the private sector. Further, you must take a responsible and active role in shaping a strong, diverse and inclusive research environment with care for the early career scientist. You must take active part in department forums, committees and working groups, constructive implementation of department strategies and promote scientific and social events and cross departmental collaboration.
Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, external funding track record, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications as well as academic citizenship contribution will also be considered.
Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for an overall assessment of the candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
