Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen
We are offering a PhD fellowship in molecular mechanisms of synaptic homeostasis commencing 1st of June 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.
Our group and research
The Walter group is highly interactive and characterized by teamwork. The team is interdisciplinary and international and we welcome team members of any nationality, gender and age. For our work we use the model system Drosophila melanogaster and study synaptic transmission at the larval neuromuscular junction (NMJ). This model synapse is easily amenable to electrophysiological analyses and light microscopy. Besides studying the basic molecular machinery mediating neurotransmission, the lab is interested in describing plasticity mechanisms by which synapses dynamically adjust their transmission strength on various timescales. Information on the Walter group can be found here: https://www.walter-lab.com/.
Project description
The position is part of the project “The cooperative synapse: relevance for neurotransmission and human disease” funded by the Novo Nordisk foundation. The project involves the characterization of molecular mechanisms underlying presynaptic homeostatic potentiation (PHP), an innate rescue mechanism synapses use to adapt their transmission strength in the light of external perturbations. Recent work in the lab has established distinct PHP mechanisms at the NMJ on timescales of minutes vs. hours/days (see Böhme et al., Nat Commun. 2019 Mar 6;10(1):1085. doi: https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-08977-6). The current project is directed to investigate pre- and postsynaptic signaling events underlying PHP specific for these timescales by combining electrophysiology, confocal- and super-resolution STED microscopy with pharmacology and Drosophila genetics. The project also aims to investigate putative effects of known human disease mutations on synaptic function and PHP by introducing those into Drosophila melanogaster for further analysis.
Principal supervisor is Associate Professor Dr. Alexander Matthias Walter, Department of Neuroscience, [email protected] , direct phone: +45 3533 4631.
