Postdoc in Metabolomics of metabolic diseases
Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research
University of Copenhagen

We are seeking a highly motivated and dynamic researcher with expertise in analysis and interpretation of metabolomics data to work in the Moritz group for metabolomics. The position is a 2-year position to start February 1, 2022, or after agreement.

Background
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research’s vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms that underlie metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. We were established in 2010 and in 2017, we moved into new laboratories, offices and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower www.maersktower.ku.dk.

The Center has around 260 employees who work in an international, highly collaborative research environment across a range of biomedical disciplines. You can read more about us here: www.cbmr.ku.dk.

Our group and research
Our goal is to use metabolomics approaches to study the role of metabolites and lipids in metabolism. By using mass spectrometry based methods we can screen for 100s to 1000s compounds or target specific compounds in different biological systems. We hope to be able to uncover the basic role of metabolites in metabolism and their role in developing diseases. You can read more about the Moritz Group here.

Project description
The project aims to develop and apply mass spectrometry based methodology for studying metabolic diseases. The methodology will be based on using liquid pipetting robot for sample preparation of plasma samples, and LC-QTOF-MS analysis, both using reversed phase and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography. The project involves setting up validation criteria, QC-methodology for being able to compare batches of analyses. For improve the metabolite annotation criteria we will add collisional-cross section values for accurate metabolite identity in addition to retention time and tandem mass spectrometry. All projects will be in close collaboration with other groups at CBMR or external collaborators.

Your job
Your responsibility will be to develop methodology and strategies for high throughput mass spectrometry based metabolomics. The methods will be applied to study cohorts involving phenotypes of healthy persons and patients with different degree of diseases, as well being part of metabolomics analysis in a project involving the Simulator of the human intestinal microbial ecosystem (SHIME®).

The objectives are the following: 1) develop strategies and methods for identifying metabolic signatures in relation to metabolic diseases; 2) develop high-throughput concepts for being able to run large cohorts.

You must have excellent communication and organisational skills as you will contribute to collaborative work, including other research groups and the metabolomics platform at CBMR.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and qualifications:

  • PhD analytical chemistry, biochemistry or other subject relevant areas
  • Experience in LC-MS based metabolomics using Bruker tims-TOF Pro MS instrument
  • Experience in combining ion mobility and mass spectrometry data
  • Experience in metabolomics analysis of “SHIME®” samples
  • Experience in preprocessing of LC-MS data using Metaboscape and mzMine.
  • Knowledge in bioinformatics and biostatistics
  • Demonstrated capacity for effective teamwork.
  • Proven track record showing scientific productivity in peer reviewed journals.
  • Experience in supervising other researchers at different levels.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral.

Place of employment
The place of employment is at Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Maersk Tower, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment.

Terms of employment
The employment as postdoc is a full time (37 working hours) and fixed-term position for 2 years. Starting date is February 1, 2022, or after agreement.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not been tax liable to Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of December 11, 2019.
