We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic assistant professor with expertise in one or more areas of disaster risk management, global health, and climate change adaptation for a 4-year position with start date as January 1st 2024 or soonest thereafter.

The position will contribute to the themes of urban living and health, sustainability, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation and the politics of adaptation.

Our research

The position will be based at the Global Health Section and work in close collaboration with The Copenhagen Centre for Disaster Research (COPE). The research and expertise of the Global Health Section cover a range of global health challenges, including climate change and disasters, environmental and urban health, to name a few. Employing an interdisciplinary approach, we focus specifically on vulnerable population groups, including those residing in low- and middle-income societies. We place significant emphasis on capacity strengthening projects, encompassing educational-, institutional-, and research-based initiatives.

The section hosts two educational programs- a professional Master in Disaster Management and a Master of Science in Global Health. We are a highly interdisciplinary section and place great focus on collegiality, teamwork, diversity and support in our everyday activities.

Your job

The assistant professor will work with colleagues mainly on topics related to disasters, health, urban and sustainable living, and climate change adaptation. The assistant professor is expected to work independently developing their ideas within the specific topics and in a collaborative manner in ongoing projects and in the work of the section.

The assistant professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • research, including publication/academic dissemination duties
  • research-based teaching and supervision on both educational programmes at the Global Health section and where relevant, other programmes and courses at the Department of Public Health.
  • sharing knowledge with key stakeholders and society at large
  • participation in formal pedagogical training programme for assistant professors at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

Furthermore, we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following skills and experience:

Essential experience and skills

  • You have a PhD in disaster studies, climate change adaptation within a social science field
  • You are highly experienced in mixed method approaches and with research experience in Global South contexts
  • You have experience with master level teaching and student supervision
  • You have an active interest in urban health, disaster risk management, climate change adaptation
  • You have pre- and postgraduate teaching experience within disaster studies and urban health issues
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills written and spoken

Desirable experience and skills

  • Experience of working with grant writing
  • Experience of working in interdisciplinary teams and networks
  • Interest in sustainability issues- urban climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, healthy living


Place of employment

The place of employment is at the Global health section, Department of Public Health, City Campus (CSS), University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment.

Terms of employment

The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.

The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of four years. The start date is January 1st, 2024 as soon as possible after agreement.

Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organisation. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 35,000 DKK/approx. 4,700 EUR (October 2021 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

The further process
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee. Once the assessment work has been completed each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
