The Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in experimental neutrino physics commencing 15 June 2020 or shortly thereafter. The position is funded by a grant from the Carlsberg Foundation to work on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, specifically the DeepCore and upcoming IceCube Upgrade low-energy extension.
Description of the scientific environment
The candidate will be located at the Niels Bohr Institute, with the possibility of short stays abroad to foster enhanced research ties with international collaborators; most likely in N. America and/or N. Europe.
Project description
The successful applicant will be involved with multi-year data analysis from IceCube-DeepCore focusing on atmospheric neutrino oscillation physics and preparation for the 2022/23 deployment of the IceCube Upgrade. The local group is invested in making precision measurements of tau neutrino appearance, mitigating systematic uncertainties, and developing the related analysis and experimental techniques for analyzing data from the IceCube Upgrade. A background in experimental analysis techniques and computer coding are recommended.

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:
Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an M.Sc. degree in Physics, Astronomy, or a related scientific field with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on relevant work experience.
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 322,642 (approx. €43,015) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 44,567). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
