København K
We are offering a PhD fellowship in Molecular GeoBiology commencing 1 June 2020 or as soon as possible hereafter.
Our group and research
The group is an interdisciplinary mix of skills and background. The combined focus of our work is mineral surfaces and interactions with organic matrices in particular DNA, proteins and microbes. We apply nanoscale techniques (atomic force microscopy and infra-red spectroscopy) combined with bulk level approaches to quantify dynamics of interactions and to understand the determining parameters driving the them. Beside the PI, the group consist of 3 Post docs (1 mineralogist, 1 archaeologist, 1 biogeochemist), 1 PhD students (1 Computational modelling), and 2 master students (1 chemist and 1 biochemist). Current ongoing microbial projects include biofilm formation on mineral surfaces and horizontal gene transfer experiments. For more info on the group and our research: kksand.com
Project description
The aim of this project is to investigate if minerals can serve as unrecognized hotspots for the observed and alarming distribution of antibiotic resistance genes. You will have a central role in the project and be expected to carry out experiments to investigate biofilm formation on a range of mineral surfaces and conduct horizontal gene transfer experiments. Additionally, you will be involved in extracting and culturing natural microbes from sediments. Fluorescent staining will be a part of our methods for quantifications. For the uptake rate experiments we plan to use natural competent soil bacteria, but experience with gene modifications can be beneficial. It will be expected that you can work independently with microbiology. Initial training and secondment is likely to be at the Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø.
