The Saxo Institute in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Copenhagen is inviting applications for a postdoc position in the historiography of Josephus starting on 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
This is a full-time fixed-term position for 24 months.
Job content
The postdoc project will form a part of the Research project Responses to Imperialism in Roman Historical Writing a joined venture between the universities of Copenhagen, Oxford, Georgetown in Washington D.C., Notre Dame in Indiana, and the university of Southern Denmark which hosts the project. The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The successful candidate will center on the Jewish historian, general and priest, Josephus. The focus will be devoted to how Josephus writes about Rome’s conquest of Jerusalem and the defeat of the Jewish people at the time he lived in Rome during the reign of the Flavian dynasty. Relevant research questions could be: What is Josephus’ attitude to Roman rule and Roman conquest? How is criticism or reservations against Rome’s use of power expressed? To what extent are Josephus thoughts on Roman power, use of violence and conquest aligned with the views of other historians of Rome in the imperial period. What kind of literary strategies do Josephus use?
The succesful candidate is expected to produce two articles in peer reviewed journals and one book chapter in the volume from the project’s first conference. The candidate will be based at the Saxo Institute in Copenhagen and must be willing to work in the department on a daily basis. Moreover, the candidate is expected to take part in project relevant activities at the University of Southern Denmark.
The Saxo Insitute house research and education within the fields of History, Ethnology, Northern European and Classical Archaeology and Ancient Greek and Latin.
Qualification requirements
Appointment as a postdoc presumes research qualifications on at least PhD level.
Ideally the successful candiate will hold a PhD degree in classics or in ancient history and will have a thorough knowledge of Josephus’ different texts, Jewish history under Roman rule and the history of Flavian Rome.
The candidate’s PhD degree must not be older than 1 October 2017.

Assessment criteria
Applicants will primarily be assessed in relation to their research qualifications, including their publications, ability to conduct independent research and participate in research collaborations, and their experience of research management. In addition, the applicant’s research plan and research potential will be assessed in relation to the overall project described above.
Teaching qualifications are not a requirement, but if the postdoc is expected to teach, then documented teaching experience can be included in the overall assessment.
The recruitment process
Once the deadline for applications has expired, the head of department will consider advice from the appointment committee and select applicants for assessment. All applicants will be notified whether they have been shortlisted. The dean will then set up an expert assessment committee to consider the applications. The selected applicants will be informed who is serving on the committee. They will be offered the opportunity to comment on the committee’s assessment of their application before the appointment is announced.

Remuneration and terms of employment
The appointment is for a fixed term of 24 months and will be made in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). In addition, a total pension contribution of 17.1% of salary and pensionable supplements will be allocated. It will be possible to negotiate further supplements based on qualifications.
