PhD student on complexity and plasticity of the mammalian spinal cord
We are seeking a PhD candidate with expertise in neurodevelopmental biology and/or systems neuroscience for a joint position between Novo Nordisk’s Dept of Stem Cell Research and the Kiehn laboratory at the Department of Neuroscience, University of Copenhagen.
About Novo Nordisk Dept of Stem Cell Discovery:
The department Stem Cell Discovery is a part of Stem Cell R&D, which specializes in the development of cell therapies for the treatment of serious chronic diseases - applying pluripotent stem cells for the development of novel therapies to treat serious chronic diseases. We differentiate stem cells toward therapeutic relevant cell types. You will join our dedicated team of approximately 20 employees including scientists, technicians and students and you will be a part of the daily work in our stem cell laboratories.
About the Kiehn lab at the Dept of Neuroscience (UCPH)
The Kiehn lab is part of the The Department of Neuroscience at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. The laboratory is offering a creative and international environment, with a focus on functional operation and molecular logic of neural networks controlling movements in the normal and diseased nervous system including motor functions after spinal cord injury. We are using an area of experimental approaches including molecular mouse genetics, imaging, optogenetics, electrophysiology and anatomy.
The Position
The project will involve expanding our knowledge of lineage depth and diversification in the central nervous system during development, and place this in a context relevant for potential future cell replacement therapies in the injured spinal cord. Further, this project will also investigate various strategies for cell replacement in the spinal cord using rodent tissue and provide valuable insight that may inform human therapeutic strategies. The project will require the execution of a diverse range of experiments and will require an extremely ambitious and dedicated candidate. In the position you will work between both Novo Nordisk’s Dept of Stem Cell Discovery and UCPH Dept of Neuroscience in the Lab of Ole Kiehn. At both sites you will be a member of teams with world-leading neurobiological expertise, and at Novo Nordisk additionally surrounded by computational experts.
During the project, the candidate will also have to follow the PhD requirements as set out by national regulations and the Faculty’s PhD school. The position has attached funding for travel to conferences and courses for the dissemination of results and acquisition of new skills.
The position is for 3 years.
Qualifications
We are seeking candidates that hold a master’s degree (or similar education) with a background in developmental biology, neuroscience and/or functional genomics. Any of the following practical competencies are advantageous: cell culture, histology, cell transplantation, functional genomics, computational biology, flow cytometry, developmental assays (including micro-surgery) or rodent behavioural assays, neurophysiological techniques.
It is advantageous for the candidate to enjoy working in a laboratory and execute experiments with high precision. It is important that the candidate is comfortable performing experimentation with animal tissue and live animals. In addition to a strong foundation of laboratory skills and a robust scientific profile, it is important the candidate is enthusiastic about this field of research. Due to the cross-institute nature of this position successful candidates should have strong communication and collaborative skills, and a willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
Candidates must fulfil the criteria for Industrial PhD candidates as set out by Innovation Fund Denmark and by the Faculty’s PhD school.
