Odense M

A two year postdoc position is available at the research unit Nordcee, Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark. The successful candidate will join a team of scientists studying the ecophysiology and ecology of ammonia-oxidizing archaea in oxygen limited environments funded by a Villum Young Investigator grant to Assistant Professor Beate Kraft.

The project:

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea are key players in the nitrogen cycle of the world’s oceans. They are frequently found in oxygen-depleted environments like marine oxygen-minimum zones or sediments though they are thought to have a strictly aerobic physiology. We found evidence for a so far undiscovered anaerobic metabolic pathway in a cultured representative.

The aim of the postdoctoral project is to identify the activity and distribution of this process in the marine environment. The project has a strong field work component and involves rate measurements using stable isotopes, and tracking of relevant intermediates by microsensor and optode measurements.

Required qualifications:
Applicants need to have a PhD and a background in environmental microbiology, biogeochemistry, or related fields demonstrated by scientific publications. We are looking for a highly motivated and curiosity-driven candidate with field work experience. Working experience with stable isotope labelling techniques or with microsensor and optode measurements is of advantage. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory.

The expected starting date is 1 April 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Application deadline: 28 February 2021.

For further information please contact Beate Kraft, e-mail: [email protected].

Application, salary etc.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

The application must include the following:
• A curriculum vitae including information on previous employment.
• A full list of publications stating the scientific publications on which the applicant wishes to rely.

Shortlisting may be used in the assessment process.

Incomplete applications and applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.

To qualify you must have passed a PhD or equivalent. Applications will be assessed by an expert assessor/committee. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university.
