The Mads Clausen Institute at the Faculty of Engineering invites applications to one or more 3-year PhD position(s) in automation and digitalized production. The position is located within the Section SDU Technology Entrepreneurship and Innovation (TEI) at the Faculty of Engineering on the international campus Sønderborg.
The position(s) is available from 1. April 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Research environment
The section SDU Technology Entrepreneurship and Innovation (TEI) unites international researchers from a variety of research areas and students with diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.
The research foster ideation, product and process development, and the commercialization of potential technical inventions.

Job description
The research for this PhD position will be in close collaboration with the international companies Siemens and Danfoss. The project will research the value chain from product and machine development to operation and how to use simulation and digital twins to increase adaptability for design, planning and operation of automation solutions.
The Siemens PLM tools and automation equipment will be applied (e.g. Mechatronics Concept Design, Process Simulation, Plant Simulation). The goal is to develop an integrated framework from design to operation, where virtual models are linked to physical counterparts during the value chain from machine builder to end customer. In the collaboration between universities and Siemens, innovative use of the PLM and automation tools will be applied and further developed leading to real demonstrators in the laboratory environment as well as at a case company.
According to the Siemens and Danfoss collaboration the candidate is expected to spent significant time in the companies. Visits to other Siemens locations in Sweden and Germany are expected.
Profile and requirements
The candidate is required to have a degree as Master of Science in Engineering within manufacturing, industrial, operations management or similar (equivalent to a Danish master's degree).

Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).
Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.
Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

- has knowledge and practical experience within one or more of the following:
- Design and operation of Manufacturing Systems
- PLM software tools CAD, CAE, CAM, PDM
- Automation solutions combining technology and humans e.g. Collaborative Robotics
- Digital twins from design to operation
- IT control architectures ERP, MES, Scada, PLC, CNC
- Internet of Things – IOT
- Industry 4.0 enabling technologies
- has adequate communication skills in English speaking and writing as well as basic Danish speaking
- is able to research complex theoretical knowledge and communicate this clearly and easy understandable at all levels in an industrial organization.
- is open minded and able to challenge the company, facilitate work shops and couple theory with practice.
- is ambitious, well-motivated and hardworking
- has the ability of working independently and has a strong sense of responsibility
- is flexible and willing and able to work as part of a team
- has a positive attitude with a good sense of humour
- is able to bridge university and industry environment
- has teaching experience

- Motivation letter stating your specific interest, motivation and qualifications for the project in question (max. two pages). Upload in the field called “Project description”.
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae, describing research, publication and teaching experience, computational skills and including personal contact information.
- Verified copies of the official bachelor diploma and master's diploma and transcripts of exams.
- Completed TEK PhD form for calculation grade point average. Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish). Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- An official and verified written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade giving institution, if the thesis/examination project is evaluated by approved/passed. The statement must clearly state that the candidate has been among the top 30 pct. in the graduation class for the study programme.
