Studiejob - Kongens Lyngby
In the Section for Bioinformatics, Department of Health Technology, we are looking for a part-time assistant with experience in JavaScript and HTML to help us make JavaScript-based versions of various web tools used in teaching.
The job
When teaching the course 22111 Introduction to Bioinformatics, we use a long list of web servers to carry out various tasks. This works fine for a few participants, but with the number of students we have currently, server response time becomes a serious issue. This is hard to avoid in some cases, which require access to large updated databases, but some of the computationally less heavy tasks could be carried out by the participants’ own laptops instead of on backend servers, if they were implemented in JavaScript to be run in a web browser.
There is a web portal for bioinformatics named Sequence Manipulation Suite (SMS2), which is written 100% in HTML and JavaScript. It contains many tools for various lightweight DNA or protein sequence analysis tasks, but the individual tools are often not very flexible or only partially implemented. We would like better versions of a couple of the tools in SMS2, inspired by other web tools.

Our expectations of you
We are looking for a part-time assistant with practical experience in writing JavaScript and HTML. You should also have some knowledge of C and Python, since existing implementations of the tools we would like you to code are written in those languages. You must be used to working independently, be strong in detail, and have good written English skills, as the user interfaces to the tools will be in English. Familiarity with a Unix environment would be an advantage.
You may be a bioinformatics student, but not necessarily. Previous knowledge of bioinformatics would be an advantage, but it is not a requirement.
What we offer in return
We offer you an interesting and challenging job with the opportunity to make a difference by creating practically useful web tools for teaching and research. The section for bioinformatics is an exciting and dynamic environment where you will work together with cutting-edge experts in the field.
Salary and appointment terms
Salary and employment terms in accordance with the OAO-S Joint Agreement and the organization agreement for IT employees (Prosa) in the service of the state.
Working hours are on 9 hours per week and can be organized flexibly in relation to holidays, exams, etc. Starting date is 1 February 2023 (or according to mutual agreement) and will be for 3 month.
The workplace is DTU Lyngby Campus.
Application and contact
Please submit your online application no later than 14 December 2022 (Danish time). Open the “Apply now” link, fill out the form and attach your motivated application, CV and documentation for study activity. In the application, we would like to hear a little about you, your competencies, and why you are applying for the position.

Your primary tasks will be to
- Write JavaScript implementations of some bioinformatics algorithms (primarily pairwise alignment, DNA translation, and ORF finding), based on the SMS2 source code (in JavaScript) and the source codes of other implementations (in C and Python);
- Design HTML-based user interfaces for these implementations (SMS2 code can be used as a starting point, but the look and feel should be more DTU-like).
