Kongens Lyngby

DTU Structural Lab at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Campus Lyngby is looking for an experienced and skilled laboratory engineer for mechanical testing over a broad spectrum of industry segments within civil and mechanical engineering. The laboratory is among the largest and most advanced of its kind in Northern Europe and consist of a large variation of hydraulic testing machines and actuators as well as large strong floors and walls for structural testing.

We are looking for a new colleague, who has considerable hands-on experience within the field of experimental mechanical laboratory testing of construction materials, components, and large-scale structures, and who can both participate in research and teaching activities, as well as act as project responsible for commercial testing projects, carried out by DTU Structural Lab as testing consultancy services for industry partners.

The job
You will report directly to the laboratory manager or deputy laboratory manager and work as a part of a dynamic technical team, which consists of both other laboratory engineers as well as technicians. The team forms the core technical service and operational staff of the laboratory.

The following areas of responsibility are included in the position:

  • Assisting the laboratory management with the daily operation of the lab.
  • Leading, administrating, and carrying out experimental testing projects for the industry as part of the consultancy testing services offered by the laboratory.
  • Participating in research projects with the responsibility for mechanical testing activities.
  • Providing new users, incl. students, training on test equipment operation and basic techniques.
  • Developing new test methods, techniques, and setups in close cooperation with both the scientific and technical staff in the associated sections at the department.
  • Ensuring a high level of quality in testing, both with regards to maintenance of calibration schedules, efficiency and accuracy of test procedures, and specimen handling, as well as organizing and maintaining a large inventory of different types of specialized test fixtures, rigs, and associated measurement equipment.

Our expectations of you
The successful applicant must hold an engineering or machinery engineer or similar degree and demonstrate a proven background within operation of mechanical testing equipment, specifically servo-hydraulic and/or electro-mechanical testing machines and actuators operated by digital controller systems.

The area of application can be within both mechanical and/or civil engineering. But the applicant should explain in which field of testing prior experience has been gained.

Furthermore, as structural testing on the strong floor/wall often involves design and construction of structural test setups, where manufacturing of necessary components in machine shops are part of the preparation process for the test activity, experience with analysis and design of steel components will be preferable, including experience with generation of drawings in a CAD program or similar.

The applicant must be able to work independently, but also possess strong qualifications within team work, flexibility, and communication, and be able to keep an overview and focus on the most efficient task completion, when many on-going projects are being carried out at the same time in the laboratory.

What we offer in return
We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international atmosphere with the focus on research, teaching, innovation, and scientific advice for the benefit of society. We place emphasis on a high level of professionalism among our staff, so skills development is an integral part of our organization. We offer a great flexibility in the position. In the area of technical and natural sciences, DTU is one of the leading research and education institutions in Europe.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) or the OAO-collective agreement and the organization agreement for Mechanical Engineers ashore or other relevant agreement.

The workplace is DTU Lyngby Campus and the employment will be in the Section of Solid Mechanics at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering.

Application and contact
Please submit your online application no later than Friday, 30 December 2022. Open the “Apply now” link, fill out the form and attach your motivated application, CV and exam certificates.

If you would like additional information about the position, please contact Professor and Head of Laboratory, Christian Berggreen on phone +45 2020 2141 or by e-mail [email protected] .

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, disability, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
