We are offering a 36 months PhD fellowship in bacterial and mammalian cell and molecular biology commencing on November 1, 2021, or after agreement.
Overall research focus
The research focus is to investigate how specific commensal and mutualistic gut bacteria as well as the total collective of trillions of gut bacteria influence metabolic health of the human host. The ultimate perspectives include the discovery and characterization of novel microbial compounds for the prevention or treatment of common metabolic dysfunctions like metabolic syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis obesity.
Project description
We seek a talented, enthusiastic and passionate young investigator to perform a PhD project in bacterial and mammalian cell biology. The main objective of the PhD project is to investigate biological effects of a newly discovered bacterial polypeptide and its smaller peptide fragments on a number of different target cell types with the ultimate goal of maturating the peptides for later clinical studies in monkeys and humans.
Principal supervisor is Professor Oluf Pedersen, Herlev-Gentofte Hospital and Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen.

The place of formal employment is Center of Clinical Metabolic Research, Department of Medicine, Herlev-Gentofte University Hospital, Copenhagen. The researcher will, however, primarily be doing his or her research at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen (www.cbmr.ku.dk).
Terms of employment
The employment as PhD fellow is full time and for 3 years. The starting date is November 1, 2021, or after agreement. It is conditioned upon the applicant’s successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant.

Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD student at SUND are to:
- Carry through an independent research project under supervision
- Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
- Participate in active research environments including a stay at another research team
- Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
- Teach and disseminate your knowledge
- Write a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project
Key criteria for the assessment of applicant
- Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree related to the subject area of the project e.g. molecular biology, molecular biomedicine, biochemistry, medicine, bioinformatics or biotechnology etc.
- Have achieved a high grade master’s degree
- Experience of working with complex bacterial and mammalian cell and molecular biology
- Prior knowledge and experience in metabolic research
- Excellent scientific publication track record in relation to career stage
- Other professional activities such as posters and conferences
- Excellent written and spoken English language skills
