About the position and the assignments

Danish Red Cross is looking for a new colleague with a strong interest in and experience from working with capacity development as a driver for localisation, preferably with knowledge of the Red Cross Movement. The position is the thematic focal point on branch development, volunteering and youth engagement in DRC’s international engagement. The National Society Development (NSD) Specialist leads and drives the technical quality and support to the DRC international operation within these areas.

You will be based at the Danish Red Cross HQ in the International Operations Unit, with frequent travels to the field. You will work closely with colleagues at the Danish Red Cross HQ and Country Offices as well as with the International Federation of the Red Cross Red Crescent (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and others.

The position is part of DRC’s Strategy and Localisation Team, which develops guidance and oversees and supports the operationalisation of DRC’s International Strategy when it comes to localisation including national society development, cooperation modalities and community engagement. Each team member has a main technical area of responsibility and will also more generally contribute to ensure a well-coordinated DRC approach to localisation.


Your main responsibilities will be to:


  • Technically support DRC Country Managers and other field staff on branch development, volunteering and youth engagement in alignment with Red Cross Red Crescent (RCRC) Movement policies, guidance and tools.
  • Drive processes on behalf of DRC together with relevant RCRC Movement partners to explore opportunities for contextualised approaches to branch development, volunteering and youth engagement in fragile settings.
  • Contribute to good RCRC Movement coordination of NSD in close cooperation with ICRC, IFRC and other relevant partners.
  • Manage and coordinate DRC’s Branch Development Working Group.
  • Further develop DRC’s approach to branch development, volunteering and youth engagement – including updates and revisions of DRC guidelines, manuals, training curricula.
  • Participate in relevant fora within the DRC for learning on branch development, volunteering and youth engagement through sharing of good practises and examples of concrete initiatives and products.
  • Participate in relevant forums for exchange of experiences within and outside the RCRC Movement

Your profileWe are looking for a professional with at least five years of international experience with humanitarian and development organisations. You are fully on top of the localisation agenda and of the principles and modalities to apply in supporting localisation. You have experience from working with volunteer and youth driven approaches, capacity development, organisational development and partnerships. Experience from the Red Cross Movement and its approaches to branch development will be an advantage. You have excellent English language skills. French is considered an asset. You are a good communicator and a team player, and have a structured, systematic way of working and meeting deadlines. The position requires flexibility and ability to take lead and independently drive processes and agendas. You are available for field missions including in emergency response contexts. It is expected to have up to 8 weeks of travel.

The position is a one-year, full-time position - 37 working hours per week. Salary and employment conditions are in accordance with Danish Red Cross’s collective bargaining agreement with HK and AC with a salary level between DKK 43,500 – 49,300 depending on experience and qualifications, including allowances and pension. The position is placed at the Danish Red Cross Head Quarter on Blegdamsvej 27 in Copenhagen.
