In the 20 years 3Shape has existed, our world class optical 3D scanners and software solutions have changed the world of dentistry. What used to be done by physical impressions of teeth and cast gypsum model is now replaced with 3D scanners and a fully digital workflow. This enables safer and better treatments, easier communication between experts, and a far more convenient workflow for both dentists and patients.A quarter of our staff is working in R&D. We work in teams with expertise spanning from hardware and software engineering to usability research and beta testing in real dental clinics. We have a stimulating environment and a strong team spirit, sharing a common goal of offering the best and most innovative solutions.As a scanner developer, you work at the heart of our technology, and have a unique opportunity to impact our products for the future.Let’s change dentistry together.Your RoleA scanner developer in the hardware R&D department is working on one or more development projects, that ultimately lead to new products. We are organized in teams with the right expertise to go from the initial idea to a finished product, with documented performance and efficient production workflow.We are experimental and innovative, and with a clear focus on making life easier for our users. You will thus be working very closely with other disciplines to solve challenges in the best way possible.As a developer specialized in optics and physics, you are part of very diverse tasks, and it is thus necessary to understand both the fundamentals that make our products work and analyze and communicate what we encounter for the first time.The daily tasks can be e.g.:
  • Testing ideas with fast prototypes and identifying the right technologies for a new feature.
  • Developing a new calibration routine that can get our performance those few percent better or more consistent.
  • Designing advanced optical systems, that can be produced efficiently in tens of thousands.
    • Your profile
  • A M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in physics, optical engineering or similar.
  • Good problem-solving skills, as we are trusted with many important challenges.
  • Team player with good collaborative and communication skills, also outside your primary field.
  • Curious, with a desire to understand problems in depth.
  • Creative, to identify the best solutions.
  • Analytical, to make the right tradeoffs with many stakeholders.
    • It is a benefit if you:
  • Are comfortable in an optics lab
  • Have experience with programming, e.g., Python or C#.
  • Are experienced in optical or medical device development.
  • Know how to design or optimize imaging systems.
