Over the next five years, Novo Nordisk R&D will identify and execute on new strategic priorities, enabling the build of a more diverse, dynamic and scientifically leading pipeline of drug discovery and development projects to advance a portfolio of differentiated medicines in areas of unmet medical needs. We seek an experienced leader to help establish and drive our R&D Portfolio Management team.

About the department

The R&D Strategy and Portfolio Management unit serves as an internal staff function collaborating across the R&D organisation to develop, refine and facilitate the execution of strategies to meet Novo Nordisk’s R&D aspirations. The unit directly supports and reports to the top management in R&D and consists of professionals with backgrounds in science, business and consultancy. The team is overall responsible for driving central R&D portfolio management and to ensure proactive, efficient and professional governance of the R&D project portfolio.

The position

The Head of Portfolio Management will, in close collaboration with R&D and stakeholders across the Novo Nordisk value chain, facilitate the development and articulation of a clear roadmap for execution and implementation of the strategy for the R&D portfolio based on the corporate, R&D and therapy area strategies. This includes defining aspirations for composition, innovation, value and risk profile for the portfolio. The Head of Portfolio Management will be responsible for establishing and maintaining project portfolio management frameworks, processes and systems to enable consolidation of portfolio data for the application of analytics to enable benchmarking, risk assessment, performance analyses, and forecasting. Based on these data and frameworks, he/she will be responsible for identification of synergies, risks, redundancies and gaps within the portfolio and developing recommendations to projects, leadership and governance for management of and investment in a diverse set of assets resulting from internal and external innovation activities.

The position has a high level of executive visibility and accountability but will also require hands on interaction and collaboration within the Novo Nordisk project organisation. The position requires a deep understanding of the R&D value chain, portfolio management principles and industry best practices. It also requires business and financial acumen, as well as a strong understanding and awareness of the external competitive environment. The ideal candidate will have a balanced profile of scientific and business competencies, the ability to effectively communicate and work across the full Novo Nordisk value chain and be willing to drive projects individually and through a team.

The Head of Portfolio Management will report to the CVP of R&D Strategy & Portfolio Management and be responsible for directly leading a dynamic team of specialists and analysts. The work of the team requires a high level of cross-organisational collaboration and the ability to accomplishing objectives through indirect influence.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience within life science and Pharma industry, with Masters, PhD or MD/PhD or equivalent experience
  • Excellent business understanding of the pharma industry and R&D value chain, and the ability to link across disciplines (R&D, commercial, finance)
  • Experience in portfolio management or strategic planning departments within a large pharmaceutical or biotech company
  • Proven project management and project leadership track record
  • Established leadership capabilities and the ability to execute complex project tasks through others, under deadlines and with many diverse stakeholders
  • Strategic and visionary thinker
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • High level skills and understanding of business and financial analytics
  • Ability to continuously interact with many top-level and executive stakeholders
  • Scientific/medical aptitude, understanding of applied research and clinical development
