Are you an enthusiastic and talented scientist with proven laboratory-based experience in characterisation of protein and peptide binding interactions? Are you interested in developing your career in a fast-paced environment within one of the world’s largest and most successful biopharmaceutical companies? If so, you now have the opportunity to join the Structure and Interactions department in Global Research at Novo Nordisk in Denmark as associate research scientist for a two-year position!

About the department

You will become part of the Structure and Interactions department which resides in the division of Assay, Analysis and Characterisation in Global Research Technology in Novo Nordisk. Currently, the department consists of 11 highly skilled employees. We play an important role in identification, optimization, and characterization of novel drug candidates in research projects. We contribute by determining the molecular structure and by characterising the binding properties of novel compounds towards their biological targets. Doing this, we collaborate closely with our colleagues from both the technology and biology units to elucidate the molecular mechanism for drug interaction, and with our colleagues from CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls) to establish assays for batch release of drugs. The work is organized in multidisciplinary cross-functional project teams, and we work in a flexible and highly collaborative setting.

The position
The overall objective and primary responsibility of this position is to design, plan and execute methods for binding characterization and you are expected to use the majority of your time in the laboratory. Moreover, you will beexpected to critically analyse and report experimental data.

You will primarily support the research projects with surface plasmon resonance based binding kinetics or affinity ranking of drug candidates. You will also be involved in other tasks like characterisation of assay reagents for biomarker measurements, and developing characterisation assays for drug release which you will transfer to CMC as the research project progress into development.

Finally, we will expect that you proactively identify and resolve experimental issues, performs instrument maintenance and troubleshooting as required. It is also important that you take an interest in identification and progress of novel technologies including employment of automation technologies and efficient data handling methodologies.

Depending on tasks, you are expected to both be able to work independently or closely together with colleagues within the department and across the organization.

Qualifications

You have a keen interest in protein interactions and drug research, and hold a master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline like protein science, biochemistry or biophysics. You have knowledge of and hands-on experience with binding kinetics and relevant technologies for assessment of molecular binding interactions with emphasis on surface plasmon resonance. Drug discovery and development experience from the pharmaceutical industry/biotech will be considered an advantage.

As a person you are proactive and engaged, with a positive attitude to new ideas, people and challenges. You have the ability to perform tasks independently with a strong commitment to high quality analysis, data handling, documentation and reporting. Since work takes place in project groups, you are a success-oriented team player, and find it easy to build relationships with team and project members and gain recognition amongst stakeholders with your enthusiasm, integrity, and communication skills.
