A combined position as Clinical Professor in General Surgery (50%) and as Consultant Surgeon (50%) is vacant at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and at the Department of Surgery, Lillebaelt Hospital, Vejle. The posts are considered as one entity. The professorship is limited to 5 years with the possibility of extension.
The academic position
The clinical professor will be appointed at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU. The position will be within general surgery, and focus areas could include, yet are not limited to, surgical management of malignant diseases, perioperative management and outcomes research, risk factor and inequality research, and database studies. Multidisciplinary collaboration across specialties will be expected.
Areas of responsibility
The clinical professor will be responsible for consolidating and further developing research in the Department of Surgery at Lillebaelt Hospital, Vejle. During the last decade, the department’s research efforts and publication output have increased, and the clinical professor will be responsible for organizing a larger and more mature research environment within the department by recruiting academic staff, obtaining funding, cultivating networks, and by developing and coordinating research strategies across the specialties and research groups within and outside the department itself.
The Department of Surgery in Vejle consists of three separate sections – colorectal, breast, and plastic surgery – each with their own research areas in cancer, and the clinical professor must have a sufficiently broad research experience to be able to act as a research leader for all of the three sections.
Furthermore, the clinical professor will be expected to offer support and supervision for surgical research at the other two hospital campuses within Lillebaelt Hospital.
Additionally, the clinical professor will be expected to teach and mentor postdocs, PhD students, and undergraduate students, as well as to maintain and develop national and international contacts and secure funding. Participation in assessment work will be part of the position. Moreover, profiling this research area in the public eye will be an important task.
Research activity, network and collaboration
The clinical professor will be expected to increase research activity at the research unit and to expand collaboration with other researchers at hospitals in the Region of Southern Denmark, at SDU, in the rest of Denmark and abroad.
The clinical position
The clinician will be appointed as consultant at the Department of Surgery, Lillebaelt Hospital, Vejle. The consultant must fulfil the requirements and responsibilities of a consultant in colorectal surgery. Areas of interest and clinical and administrative functions will be agreed in connection with the appointment.
Qualifications
The successful applicant has a PhD or equivalent post-graduate research qualifications and must be qualified as a consultant in colorectal surgery and general surgery and possess experience with multidisciplinary collaboration.
The preferred candidate is able to motivate and supervise and has proven research management skills, good collaborations abilities as well as visions of how to further strengthen the Department of Surgery. The applicant must be able to adopt and abide by the core values of Lillebaelt Hospital (please see below).
Danish is not required initially, but must be mastered at proficiency level C1, at the Common European Framework of References for Languages within the first 2 years of employment.

The hospital has strong values and a pervasive culture based on a “The Patient First” approach. The mission of the Department of Surgery is diagnosis and treatment of breast, skin and bowel cancer with a vision of providing unsurpassed patient experiences, logistics and clinical quality. The Multidisciplinary Team for Colorectal Cancer has been named Regional Center of Clinical Excellence.
The Department of Regional Health Research supports research in relation to the person as a whole, the good life and the more common diseases, makes out a platform for scientists and educators and builds a bridge between the University of Southern Denmark, the Region of Southern Denmark, the Region of Zealand, the hospitals in the two regions and the patient. The department focuses on the continuity of patient care across sectors, hospitals and specialist fields

The successful applicant for the clinical professor position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
