Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

Division of Glial Disease and Therapeutics, Center for Translational Neuromedicine, University of Copenhagen is looking for 1 highly motivated PhD Fellow for a project on tumor necrosis factor inhibitors in connection with cerebrospinal fluid movements in ischemic stroke.

The position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative multi-disciplinary team engaged in neuro research.

Description of the Center and the research group
Our center is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences of the University of Copenhagen and is located at the Panum Institute. We currently have 50 employees and students formed into two interacting groups: The Division of Glial Disease and Therapeutics and the Division of Cell and Gene Therapy. The Center comprises newly constructed laboratories with excellent facilities for neuroscience.

The research focus of the Division of Glial Disease and Therapeutics is on the basic biology of glial cells in the central nervous system, specifically astrocytes, and their role in several neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases, including stroke, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, tremor, ALS, schizophrenia. Sleep disturbances and the sleep-wake regulation of astrocytic calcium signalling are other focus areas of the Division. Our research is aimed at defining new strategies for the treatment of neurological diseases that target astrocytic dysfunction.

For further information about the center/research group, see: http://ctn.ku.dk/

Description of the PhD project
During an ischemic stroke, a cascade of inflammatory events in the brain and periphery follows leading to the death of cells and edema in the affected area. Tumor necrosis factor plays a key role in driving these changes in the inflammatory state. Also, recent studies from the group have found cerebrospinal fluid influx to cause acute brain tissue swelling after ischemic stroke. The main object of the PhD project is to investigate tumor necrosis factor inhibitors in connection with cerebrospinal fluid movements in ischemic stroke.
