The Ph.D. scholarship

The Ph.D. Scholarship concerns identification and Management of Child Abuse and Child Neglect: Implications for general and oral health, and oral health behaviors.

Child abuse and neglect (CAN) is a public health challenge, which is insufficiently recognized. The reported prevalence rates at around 5 % of all children are alarming and highlight the need for effective prevention strategies among primary health-care professionals. In this context the general health and dental health of minors calls for early recognition. Primary health professionals must play an important role for two reasons: 1) CAN is associated with poor well-being, health status and dental health and, 2) all Danish children and adolescents are entitled to free health check-ups by child care visitors and school nurses, beside dental care at municipal dental care services with regular dental check-ups. Thus, these primary health professionals are situated favorably to identify suspected victims of CAN and, subsequently, notify the relevant authorities. However, this is rarely the case and efforts are needed to improve identification and prevention of CAN. For this purpose, we have assembled a multidisciplinary team of experts from various public institutions (Copenhagen Police, Department of Forensic Medicine, Department of Odontology, and Børnehuset Hovedstaden). This proposed research project focuses implications for general and oral health, and oral health behaviors in children who are suspected victims of CAN.

We want to investigate the roll of primary health care professionals in prevention of CAN based on hand-on examination of suspected CAN victims reported to Børnehuset Hovedstaden, and additionally registry data form both cases and controls. Special interest is the following aspects

  1. The association between CAN and poor general and oral health, and oral health behaviors,
  2. Elucidation of early general health markers and behavioral risk factors associated with CAN
  3. The possible creation of a ten-step approach for identification and management of dissatisfied children and children with dental neglect, to ensure early identification of suspected victims of CAN in the primary sector.
