DIIS invites applications for a permanent position as Senior Researcher (at the level of Associate Professor) of US foreign and security policy starting summer/autumn 2020.
The patterns, perspectives and partnerships of global politics are in flux these years. US foreign and security policy too has undergone substantial changes. To understand these transformations, and their implications for world order, DIIS is searching for candidates with a proven track record of high academic standards within the research field of US foreign and security policy, including transatlantic relations. It would be an advantage if you also have considerable insight into broader American society and history. Your research could link to themes such as identity, culture, and ideology, but it is not a prerequisite. We prefer candidates who are at the forefront of their discipline and have an international network within the research field.
The position is aimed at candidates who have:
The selected candidate will contribute to the thematic and theoretical development of research, both within the unit and across DIIS. The more specific research and analysis field will be decided upon in collaboration between the researcher and the relevant head of research unit giving you a unique possibility to influence the research field.
We are looking for candidates with experience in publishing and communicating research results in an honest, transparent and accurate manner (in accordance with the Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity), and, preferably, also with disseminating the results, e.g. to the policy community and civil society.
DIIS’ senior researchers have unique opportunities for developing and disseminating their research to their target groups, as 60 percent of their time is reserved for research, 20 percent for policy research and ad hoc work, and 20 percent for dissemination, administration and research education (e.g. supervision). Across the various types of tasks, one fifth of the time is to be spent on income-generating assignments, as external fundraising activities are a collective priority of the institute. Hence, a willingness to actively pursue funding for research-based projects, consultancies etc. is expected, while documented results of successful external funding will be an advantage.
General Information
DIIS is a leading public research institute with a strong international reputation. Our aspiration is to strengthen independent research on international affairs. On the basis of this, we provide analyses and recommendations on Danish and international opportunities within the wider area of foreign, security and development policy. DIIS aims to be at the cutting edge of multidisciplinary research, policy analysis and communication on global affairs.
DIIS offers a dynamic and innovative international research environment with a focus on professionalism, flexibility and mutual respect amongst all colleagues. As the institute’s tasks are varied, with a wide-ranging scope of activities, we expect our staff to be flexible. DIIS employs a relatively flat management structure with a high degree of staff involvement in freely and openly exchanging views on the institute’s internal and external issues. Employees play a proactive and constructive role in the DIIS community and are expected to be present at the workplace when not travelling. However, we also allow flexible working hours, seek to be a family friendly workplace, show consideration for each other and value different perspectives.
DIIS is a bilingual Danish-English workplace. Candidates may apply for the position without prior knowledge of Danish as they will receive language tuition in order to help them learn Danish during the first 3 years of employment, as we place equal importance on written communication and dissemination of knowledge in both languages.
The institute is situated in a modern building in the new waterfront city district of Copenhagen, Nordhavn. The district is located approximately 3 km from the city centre and offers excellent public transportation options. Visit www.diis.dk to learn more about our institute.
