Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Molecular Physiology commencing 1 October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Description of the scientific environment
The Department of Nutrition Exercise and Sports at the Faculty of Science, UCPH received a 2019 #1 Shanghai rating as the top Exercise research Institution in the World in terms of scientific productivity.
Within NEXS, the Section of Molecular Physiology (4 PIs) studies the molecular mechanisms regulating adaptations to exercise and in relation to life-style associated diseases in a translational perspective from molecule to man, i.e. from the cell culture level to animal models to invasive human experiments. At any given time, the section comprises an international mix of 30-40 PhDs, post docs, visiting scientists, master students and 4 shared lab technicians + 5-10 master students. Associate prof. Thomas Elbenhardt Jensen heads one of 3 research groups within the section “Muscle Growth and Metabolism” focusing on the cell signaling and mechanisms underlying skeletal muscle hypertrophy/atrophy signaling and metabolic regulation.
For specific information regarding the research group ”Muscle Growth and Metabolism” see https://nexs.ku.dk/english/research/molecular-physiology/research-groups/muscle-growth-and-metabolism/
Project description
The present project will use advanced microscopy to study the role of compartmentalized redox signaling in skeletal muscle and adipose GLUT4-dependent glucose metabolism in humans and mice, building on our recent work. Specifically, we will collect and image skeletal muscle and fat biopsy GLUT4 localization and indices of ROS production in two human acute exercise intervention studies: 1) healthy vs. obese insulin-resistant human subjects and 2) in NOX2-deficient former chronic granulomatous disease patients. In parallel, we will use local adeno-associated virus-transfection of GLUT4, redox and mitochondrial genetically encoded biosensors, compartment-specific ROS manipulation tools and transgenic mouse models to study the contribution of NOX2 vs. mitochondrial ROS and their potential cross talk in the contexts of exercise and obesity-linked insulin resistance.
Principal supervisor is Associate professor Thomas E. Jensen, Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, E-mail: [email protected]
Job description
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:
Formal requirements
Applicants should hold a relevant MSc degree (e.g. human physiology, human biology, human nutrition, molecular biomedicine, biology, biochemistry or similar) with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience. In particular, prior practical experience with light and electron-microscopy, molecular cell biology techniques and biochemical analyses in the context of adult skeletal muscle is considered a plus.
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 333,464 (approx. €44,461) including annual supplement (+ pension at a minimum DKK 54,191). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
Application Procedure

Afterwards an assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the selected applications. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and the final selection of a successful candidate will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee and the interview committee.
The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science.
