Noise pollution is a major environmental concern. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified traffic noise, including road, rail and air traffic, as the second most important cause of ill health in Western Europe, behind only air pollution caused by very fine particulate matter. We are looking for a PhD candidate who can greatly contribute to scientific research and innovation of accurate yet fast computational predictions of environmental noise and their use in virtual reality. This PhD is an important part of a Eurostars project CBENA, Cloud-Based Environmental Noise Analysis with Treble Technologies and Henning Larsen.

If you wish to establish your career as scientist and you are looking for the best possible foundation for fulfilling your dreams and ambitions, it is right here in front of you. At Acoustic Technology (ACT), DTU Elektro, we conduct research in computational acoustics, auditory virtual reality, multi-modal perception evaluation in architectural acoustics, indoor/outdoor sound field analysis, acoustic meta materials, novel optimization methods, vibration, and transducers. There are already several researchers working in the area of computational acoustics and virtual acoustics together at DTU Elektro, DTU Compute, and other top research institutes like TU Eindhoven and EPFL. It is important to note that this is an industrial PhD with Treble Technologies in Iceland, so both fundamentals and applications of outdoor noise predictions are researched in this PhD study.

Responsibilities and qualifications
This project will investigate state-of-the-art computational methods for acoustic propagation outdoors, which can be used in urban planning and policy/decision making stages as communication and dissemination tools. This project requires an inter-disciplinary collaboration between acoustics (physics), computer and data science, mathematics, building engineering, and cognitive science (particularly hearing).

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a relevant M.Sc. degree, such as acoustics, physics, mathematics, computer science, electrical, mechanical, architectural or civil engineering. An ideal candidate should have experience in one or two of the following areas:
  • Computational acoustics methods in room and building acoustics or,
  • High performance computing (HPC) and data-driven approaches or,
  • Virtual reality tools or,
  • Acoustic signal processing and spatial (3D) sound or,
  • Building design and indoor climate factors or,
  • Subjective testing with combined audio-visual stimuli.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Your overall focus will be to strengthen the department's competences within computational modeling of environmental noise propagation, analysis, and dissemination. You will work with both academic and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad. Your primary tasks will be to:
  • Improve the currently used outdoor noise calculation algorithms in terms of accuracy and speed by hybridizing wave-based simulations, geometrical acoustics techniques, and via data-driven methods or HPC.
  • Improve the workflow between acoustic engineers and non-acoustic engineers.
  • Develop a multi-modal perception evaluation VR framework for people to accurately evaluate the noise annoyance.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide. http://www.dtu.dk/english/Education/PhD/Rules/PhDguide

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate professor Cheol-Ho Jeong and head of the ACT section Finn Agerkvist.
