Kongens Lyngby
The CHEC research group at the Department of Chemical Engineering carries out research on catalysis and high temperature processes such as combustion, gasification and pyrolysis.
In the future, large ocean going ships will likely partly use ammonia as a carbon neutral fuel. However, the emission of other pollutants such as NOx and N2O must still comply with regulations. N2O is a very strong greenhouse gas, about 300 times the greenhouse gas potential of CO2, and so it is of particular interest to minimize its emission. The objective of this project is develop a heterogeneous catalyst that is able to remove the N2O present in the flue gas of a large 2-stroke ship engine using ammonia as fuel.
The PhD project is part of the Engimmonia consortium funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program. The project involves tight collaboration with the company Haldor Topsøe A/S.
Responsibilities and tasks The tasks of the project is:
- Literature study on active materials for N2O removal using NH3 as reductant, and for purely thermal N2O decomposition.
- Synthesis of promising catalyst materials by various methods.
- Characterization of synthesized catalysts and activity screening in powder form in a flow reactor
- Definition of the most active catalysts and further improvement by e.g. variations in chemical composition, calcination temperature
- Advanced characterization by various methods in collaboration with partners such as determination of acidic/basic sites, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR (DRIFTS), electron microscopy (SEM and TEM)
- Test of the optimal candidates for poisoning (e.g. by S-species), examination of possible regeneration methods.
- Detailed kinetic study on the top candidate to derive a functional rate expression that can be used in simulations by project partners.
- Initial testing of formulated monoliths catalysts
Qualifications You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Preference will be given to candidates with a master's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
